Even the media getting restless now:
Here's Robin Brownlee before last night's game:
| Quote: | Oilers' lines vs. Vancouver tonight
Chiasson-McDavid-Draisaitl -- 52 goals
Rieder-RNH-Puljujarvi -- 15 goals
Lucic-Brodziak-Kassian -- 6 goals
Zykov-Spooner-Rattie -- 4 goals
|
| Quote: | Van lines vs. Edm
Eriksson-Horvat-Virtanen -- 35 goals
Goldobin-Pettersson-Boeser -- 34 goals
Granlund-Gaudette-Leivo -- 16 goals
Roussel-Beagle-Motte -- 9 goals
|
Note - this is not the comparison with Tampa Bay, or Toronto or Winnipeg or Washington. The Canucks have the 18th best record in the NHL, one point up on the Oilers after leapfrogging them last night. If the playoffs started today, they would be on the outside looking in.
And after the game:
| Quote: | Fans are rightfully frustrated after four straight losses that have dropped the Oilers out of the playoffs, but if you're ripping coach Ken Hitchcock for that, your frustration is misplaced. Roster isn't good enough.
|
| Quote: | There is no defending Pete Chiarelli's record as GM of the Edmonton Oilers. There is no need to wait for the Oilers to make or miss the playoffs this season to know this is true. Not a news flash. Over to you, Bob Nicholson.
|
Even Mark Spector seems to suggest Chiarelli's not quite up to snuff:
| Quote: | The three lowest Oilers ice times thru 40:00 are the 3 players GM P.Chiarelli acquired to help this season: Zykov, Spooner and Wideman
|
The Oilers have the 4th, 13th and 49th highest scorers in the league. We talked before about McDavid being in on 52% of the Oilers goals, but what percentage is it if you look at Draisaitl & Nugent-Hopkins too? I'm guessing it's 75%+. That is an incredible reliance on three guys for all your offence. No wonder it doesn't work.
It might be somewhat excusable if the team had focused on developing the defence...buuuuuuut...we have articles today about the importance of the Oilers 5th or 6th best defenceman in Russell, sooooo...there's not much depth there either.
This team is a tire fire, and it's all management's fault. Tambellini would literally have done better to this point had he taken over when Chiarelli did and did his next-to-nothing...
"Thinking that a bad team's best players are the reason the team is bad is the "Tambellini re-signing Lennart Petrell" of sports opinions." @Woodguy55
