More shocking is that we had a forward playing D, and in the top 4 no less! What a statement about the organizational defensive depth at the time.

To be fair, we'd had a horrendous run of injuries.
I also fully believe that was the only year that the Oilers full-on decided to tank. There was no rush to bring anyone back from injuries and MacTavish had a passive forecheck employed even late in games where we were trailing by a single goal. By the time of the Smyth trade, the team had decided they were getting the best draft pick they could...

The Oilers tanked and ended up getting Sam Gagner 6th overall, Alex Plante, and Riley Nash in the first round. I'm starting to think the tanking strategy was a poor one.
