Watched that same terrible game from this team to start seasons so many times. Bouch salvaged a point. But same brain fart defending and Swiss cheese goaltending we are used to.

.. teh only excuse I can think of is that this is only the 2nd game the regular Oilers have played a NHL roster..
That being said..
Jarry spent a whole summer training and he looks like Skinner 2.0
Murphy looks slow.. Walman slimmer but not faster.. so is Bob Stauffer.. maybe he was going on walks with Bob..
Shea looked Ok until the OT meltdown in his own end leading to the goal..
Podz was a force.. and Bouchard is shooting for a Norris.. great games from both..
The Oilers didn't really give up much defenisvely 5v5.. it was just every Grade B or A chance was going in the net .. those chances were usually stemming from defencemen getting caught up ice.. BTW.. I'd hate to see Jarry in a shoot out.. the scoring would be like 70%
I was thinking of going to go see McDavid in Vancouver on Thursday.. but after this I think I'll keep the credit card in the wallet.. couldn't stomach paying $300+ for a good ticket and then have to experience a result like this one live..

While I do think that Shea should have made that pass a lot quicker, he was absolutely abandoned by Hyman, and especially Kapanen. That was desperate and aggressive forechecking by Vancouver, and the absolutely earned that. I don't know if I've really seen many examples where the Oilers just outwork and outmuscle someone like that with sheer determination.

Bouchard could score the 252 goals he's currently on pace for and he still wouldn't win the Norris. The goal posts would just be moved again

Same old Oilers.
You can change the GM, you can change the coach, you can bring in all the shady characters you want. The identity of this team is poor goaltending, poor forward depth, and poor support when Draisaitl and McDavid are on the same line.
Babcock walked in here all confident he was the man to change things, and it is exactly the same thing we've seen year after year. Slow start Oilers.
And for all the bravado about McDavid and Draisaitl wanting Babcock to be tough on them and hold them accountable... they sure gave him a lot of material to use tonight.
Podkolzin looked great.
Bouchard looked like a man scorned for the Norris. Unreal game from him.

Why am I not shocked by this type of opening night performance? I think Babcock summed it up perfectly in his post match presser, after a question he asked the press corp how many goals we'd given up in pre season in total....
This Cannucks team were well beaten by our kids this time last week and should have given us confidence for the big boys to do the same. Jarry would want a couple of the goals back for sure, one in particular, but even that one started with an Oiler sprawled on the ice trying to reach a misplaced pass. There shouldn't be finger pointing at individuals here, this was a typical Oilers brain fart team performance, which nearly pulled off a win thanks to Bouch.
I want to say this is the only one and we'll turn the corner quickly, that this is 1 game of 84, but this is the Oilers we are talking about and we've been here so often at the start of each season.

I agree, it wasn’t a perfect game but if you have even an average goalie that makes a couple of those saves this is a win. One of those games you say, “first game of the season. Shaking off the rust, but glad we got a win” but when your goalie is complete dog crap. You can’t say that. Two goals he let in I save in beer league hockey and you can’t convince me otherwise. Jarry is trash
