Talk about future planning, the Oilers are off to Cologne for 2 games in the 2027/28 season, no opponents announced yet. It's part of a odd partnership with Bayern Munich to help promote the NHL in Germany and Bayern in North America. I'm not sure either need help promoting in each territory as they are doing well as it is.
However, the early heads up certainly gives the European based Oilers fans another chance to see team once again and hopefully win, the least said about the loss in Sweden the better.

I get why they do this, but I don't recall it ever being a good way for the Oilers to start the season when they do things like this.

I don’t see a reference to the dates, but I think it will be midseason prior to the Xmas break rather than at the start of the season based on the December dates for teams playing in Europe this season.

I think that would be much better for the team, so I hope that is the case.

In a way Cologne would be a wonderful place in December apart from the hockey, numerous breweries and 5 Christmas markets. Though of course the hotels will be making a killing on it all.
I'm guessing the Oilers have probably fought since the Sweden trip not to go back to Europe, as I'm guessing the league would want McDavid to help promote the game where ever. Germany and Cologne are ideal with Leon's links, Connor will certainly be second fiddle.
With my local team returning to an arena this winter, and an NHL size one to boot, I can but hope the NHL considers coming to Manchester in the next few years. It's all well and good thinking they have to go to London, but London doesn't have a hockey team, they last pro club went bust. They should go to an established market instead.
