The NHL is moving ahead with its investigation on Mike Babcock and events in Columbus as per NHLPA request.

This probably means the Oilers have given a thumbs up that they are sticking to wanting to hire Babcock?

Oh boy

Also, guess there is other stuff that never came out in public, and him asking for players phones to look through their pictures isn't even the big issue in Columbus:

Frank Seravalli @frank_seravalli
If #Oilers elect to continue down the path with Mike Babcock, sources say the #NHLPA is in receipt of “significant” additional claims from their own investigation with players that were not publicly reported in 2023.

Those claims were presented to #NHL prior to his resignation.

Frank Seravalli @frank_seravalli
Furthermore, sources indicate that asking players to see photos is NOT what ultimately resulted in Babcock’s resignation. It was the subsequent (unknown) allegation reported below that cost Babcock his job in #CBJ.

Lol this is all so ridiculous.

I'm guessing this is more along the lines of Mike Commodore crying forever that his coach called him fat 20 years ago when he showed up to training camp fat.

It really is wild how worked up people in Edmonton are about this. Yeah coaches are mean to players sometimes. 20 years ago they probably said and did some things that wouldn't look great brought to the light of todays media landscape. Newsflash.

Anyway I would have been thrilled with this hire 10 years ago but now his age and how long he's been out of the league are definitely major concerns.

The part I don't like is just the way this whole thing has been handled and the absolute buffoons that the Oilers management look like right now. Like they couldn't possibly have looked any less competant over the last year and a half.

Now that the NHLPA and the NHL are getting in on the act to stop the hiring, I'm almost hoping he gets hired now. NHL smugly approves Vegas quarentining Cassidy indefintely soley so that the Oilers can't hire him.. and now both the NHLPA and NHL are acting together to stop the Oilers next pick for coach..

I listened to a Commodore podcast talking about MB.. he came off as a whiney, mouthy cry-baby.. "Babcock had it in for me".. ".. he wanted to end my career".. lol .. what career? the guy was a stiff..

After listening to him whine and complain on the podcast I came off thinking no wonder your coach sat you in the press box ..

Seravelli talking about rumours of "significance" .. which he admits he knows nothing about what it could be.. if it was so significant why did the NHLPA and NHL not follow up on it even after MB resigned.. if it was so significant.. and the NHL and NHLPA didn't follow up.. then isn't it a cover up? ..yeah we'll see :)

I'm hoping this turns into a circus for the NHL and Betman.. firing up the popcorn..

There’s so many stories we know on Babcock I wonder how bad the other ones are. I definitely think he’s all about himself. Look no further than the Mike Modano story to see that - he scratched him strategically on the second last game of the season so that his final regular season game was only 1499. And said something about players shouldn’t be looking for milestones as why he did it. Super douchey.

The Marner thing was pretty next level too - just forced conflict on his own team.

Yeah I don't really care about any of that. These are professional athletes we're talking about. Who cares if the coach was mean to them or scratched a washed up mike modano for a game? Like honestly. I'm sure Kris Knoblauch would never have done those things. We are talking about being a bit of a prick to professional millionaire athletes here. Why should anyone here care about that stuff if the players themselves dont?

Is he a good coach? I think someone could make a pretty strong argument that his time has passed - but if not and he's what the Oilers need (and I think that archetype is exactly what they need) then bring him in.

I don't know a lot about lower level coaching prospects that are our there so maybe there's someone better but I don't see it.

I heard Jason Gregor talking about this a few days ago. Honestly it sounded like he was going to cry. Like did Mike Babcock run over his dog or what?

To be fair Gregor usually sounds like he's going to cry.. the man does like a soap box ;)

I'm with you.. the minimum wage in the NHL is close to a $1.2M CAD now.. .. so I'm not too broken up if some guys get hurt feelings.. its not like they're working in a NIKE sweat shop or something..

When you're that wealthy there'll always be some players harder to movivate than others to become more accountable for their level of play.. or even to train and get better in the off-season.. McDavid's teh best in the world and he's still training and practicing to and continuously gets himself better season to season.. can't say the same for most of the rest.

To set a higher standard of expectations you may need to put some guys out of their comfort zone.. Some guys require the motivation.. for some the self-motivation is burnt into their DNA..

There's some Oilers I think who could use some added accountability.. hopefully they rise to the higher level of expectations.. or they can't .. or won't.. then you can make your roster changes based on the results..

We'll see where this circus leads but I'm not so concerned about MB's harshness with players I'm more concerned about the fact he's been out of coaching for 6 years.

Take it FWIW.. Hyman is as nice a guy, and straight level as they come.. and he loved playing for Babcock.. I guess we'll see what shakes out.

I am not with you.

Using your argument that a millionaire pro athlete should be a robot and perform to any coaching style is ridiculous. First off, the coaches are also millionaires and they should be the best at their job. Drawing up plays, but more importantly be good leaders and communicators. It is literally their job to be coach players to be their best version of themselves. There is a time to bag skate, there is a time to reward, and there is a time to step back.

Being a dickhead coach is lazy. Players are human, and that may work for some players, but its unrealistic to think it would be universal. I am assuming, like myself, you like a hardnosed, no nonsense boss. Calls a spade a spade and is black and white. That works for some employees, for others it disaster and causes workplace stress for everyone. I would almost bet my house that Jon Cooper has an extremely high emotional IQ and works on learning how to motivate each player. If your HC is not a people person, then he better stay out of the way and have good assistant coaches surrounding him doing the people managing.

Please let this investigation take well into October!

What a crapshow, just desperate moves and poor moves at that.

I bet Toronto is looking at us and sees what's happening and say... what a clown organization.

.. this just in.. now Torts says he's out from Vegas at end of the season..

So does Vega start shopping for a new HC?

OR.. does Vegas tell Cassidy he's under contract and he's back coaching .. Cassidy says f u .. so they then extend Cassidy for another 5 years at $5M per.. and he says.. oh 25M? .. sure OK.. lol

Or.. NHL investigates Babcock.. Oilers forced to pass on Babcock.. then Vegas hires Babcock.. and the NHL says .. well you know.. on second thought.. its all good now.. hire approved!

Nice attempt at some extra motivation to get him a cup before he's out.

Hopefully it fails!

yeah...we really really want Babcock. Or Katz does at least. Now in contact directly with the NHLPA to try to sort out issues. Other reporting saying that Babcock already gave all the details to the Oilers and it did not deter us in any way. Basically just trying to find the fastest path between the PA and NHL to get this done.

Nurse asks for a trade.. you think Oilers will come out ahead on this.. extra $9M or so.. but we have Bowman deciding what to do with it after.. He'll sign Murphy for 6 x 7 or Dickenson for 5 x 6 .. can't even feel positive about this ..

Friedman more or less said there is a group of players who do want this to happen. The naysaying is coming from agents of players on the team that aren’t in that group, or agents of players who could be traded to EDM.

Pretty messy stuff.

Bleed Oil Blue @BleedOilBlue
Elliotte Friedman believes that if the Vegas Golden Knights don't bring back John Tortorella,

he could become a candidate for either the Edmonton Oilers or the Toronto Maple Leafs coaching job.

Torts comes in as a motivational speaker basically. He and all the players say he changed nothing about their system play, and Torts kept saying he doesn't need to tell guys what do to because they already know.

He comes in with perfect timing of Carter Hart coming back from injury and getting red hot, letting the whole team play loose and confident. Then as soon as Hart starts to falther, everything starts to fall apart again and they are right back to how they played under Cassidy with trash goaltending ruining the teams confidence.

Yeah, definitely sounds like we should hire Torts!

Update on Vegas and Cassidy "permissions"..
Sounds like Vegas allowed one team to talk to Cassidy midway through SCF .. never went anywhere.
So the whole "too busy.. don't want the distraction" talk was just that..
So only one team in the NHL without a HC now.. still no permission.. looks like Vegas is effectively denying Cassidy from gaining employment.. hope Cassidy just does a few ESPN stints and takes the 4.5 this year.. or sues Vegas .. and hangs over the Knights like a dark cloud next year.

Lawless is a Vegas commentator.. sorta insider..

Bako is going to be tight for net space!

Can't see Stan doing anything significant (good) with what little he has to trade with.. or cap to offer any UFA..

Unless Nurse gets an asset back.. and/or they can wisely and thriftly sign some talent with th ecap they free up.

Honestly, at this point... I feel so much more comfortable with blunders coming from this organization. If something good happens, great... must have been divine intervention. Anything left in human hands though, usually ends up being a dog's breakfast.

After dust settled the only pick of interest to me is the 2nd rounder from Latvia.. in a couple years I suspect we realize we might as well have just traded the rest of the picks away.. maybe they have too many associate managers now.. what like 5? Scouting by comittee.

What some analysts think of Bowman & his five GM assistant's picks in this years draft.. (from Cult of Hockey article.. CoH)

I feel the same.. other than the Latvian.. who is a swing by himself.. he needs to develop NHL speed if he's to suceed further.. the rest are all pretty blah.. all seem like 7th round hope shots.

Like the other guy says.. all will be confirmed and verified in 5 years.. at which time some in management may not be around to reap the rewards or consequences.

Quote:

Said Wheeler: “I didn’t like the Oilers’ draft, but it’s also hard to be too hard on them when they’re picking as late as they did. Rudolfs Berzkalns is big and has clear pro attributes as a potential future bottom-sixer. He was lower on my list than where they took him, but I mocked him as a bubble late-second/early-third round guy, and he has tools. Everyone just wants to see him make the finishing play more. I don’t view any of their other guys as NHL prospects.”

Corey Pronman, another prospects writer at The Athletic, graded the Oilers at C- for their work. “Edmonton picked Rudolfs Berzkalns with its first pick. I like him, but he’s no sure thing. Other than him, there’s no other prospect in this class I’m excited about.”

Toronto hockey writer Ken Campbell had a something different take. He wrote, “Biggest winners in the draft: Montreal, Toronto, San Jose, Chicago. Biggest losers: Vegas, Edmonton, Rangers, Seattle. (*I randomly picked those teams because I actually have no idea. And neither does anyone else. We won’t know for five years.)

At this time, Bowman has absolutely crushed July 1. Let’s see how this plays out.

Only RFA left to sign is Dach. Oilers have $5.9M available right now..

Not looking like Giroux is coming .. who's next on the wish-list?

Saw some Tarasenko talk. Unfortunately, he's just barely not old enough to get performance bonuses (he's 34). So he probably would want his ~4M again.
