Do we have to pay to get rid of him? At $6.5m he's not as bad as at $9.25m...still four years left, but on the open market he's likely in that $5.5 - $6.5m range.

I'd try and unload him at full price.. there are some teams that need to make the cap floor... whatever they do they can't do a Lucic/Neal type of idea.. taking back anothe rbad contract and hoping the guy coming back is going to have some miraculous rejuvination as an Oiler.. get teh 9,25M and use it extra smartly.. and like a scrooge.

Wonder if Nurse is expecting teams that he is gifting a spot on his 3-5 team list will be rushing to the chance to get him.

This is positive news. I didnt think we would be ablel to dump/trade nurse with McD here as they are buds. Thankfully both sides can move on. Lets hope Bowman doesnt blow this trade as well.

Bleed Oil Blue @BleedOilBlue
According to Elliotte Friedman, Oilers Darnell Nurse's preference would be a move to the Eastern Conference, and not to another Canadian team.
If a Western Conference destination is in play, the Los Angeles Kings appear to be a possibility.
Friedman adds there is legitimate interest around the league, and believes a hockey trade will ultimately get done.
Nurse having a good run with Murphy and being decent at the Worlds probably helps us out here. Still many GM's out there that value size and fitness to play lots of minutes over anything else.

Hopefully Bowson doesn't blow this one. I mean there's no way he can do any worse than the Skinner trade right?
Right?
I will say I hope Nurse gets cheered when he come back here. Can't really question that he gave it his all for this team for a long time.

It would be very hard to find a worse cap situation for a dman than Nurse for us to trade for. Skinner's low cap hit made it easy for Bowman to screw his trade up.
I suppose we could do something like:
From Oilers: Nurse (30% retained) + 1st + Howard
From Florida: Seth Jones (nothing retained)
Kind of a Nurse version of the Skinner trade.

I think we can do better than that.. (not sure about Stanley) .. Nurse has value.. he's got the required peripherals.. just needs a better CPU running at a higher speed .. maybe just needs a different O/S .. which another team or coach could provide him.. as long as a few teams beleive this as well.. then we could and should get a decent return.. with minimal cap retention if any.. if we want you can even take back a guy with $2M salray and bury him in Bako and take $1.225M off the cap hit..
Cap Hit = (Salary - ($850+350)K = (Salary - 1.225)
So a team can take Nurse's 9.25 cap minus the $2M player sent back to Oil = Nurse at $7M ..
Oil save (-9.25M + 0.775M) = -8.475M
Lots of possibilities..
Guess we'll see Bowman's abilities as a GM .. he has been a massive dissappointment until now IMHO, hopefully those other "5 AGM's" can point him in the right direction.. but more likely.. point him in 5 different directions..

If we are being fair, the Oilers asked Nurse if he would lift his NMC. So this is predictable saying, if you don't want me, the trade me.
Nurse has all the cards and Bowman (if he can even do a good deal) should get a decent return. Let's hope it's not a 1 for 1.
The very definition of insanity is doing the exact same thing expecting different results.
Generally Disappointed.

from Cult of Hockey article.. this is Friedman today talking about league interest in Nurse..
https://edmontonjournal.com/sports/hockey/nhl/cult-of-hockey /edmonton-oilers-darnell-nurse-legitimate-interest-in-trade
| Quote: | .. On the Fan Hockey Show out of Toronto today, Friedman said;
“I think people would be surprised by the amount of interest. To me, it just comes down to what kind of deal you’re willing to make. Like the last time I spoke to somebody about this was the other day. There were some teams that are saying, ‘Well, you know, you retain something, we’re interested.’
I do think there’s legit interest. Edmonton had kind of indicated that they didn’t think they’d have to retain a lot, if at all.
To me, there’s a little bit of negotiating, sabre-rattling there. I think Edmonton’s going to be able to make a deal. I just think it comes down to what does it all look like? A lot of this is not only about the player. It’s about what you can extract or not have to give up.
So it’s like there’s two parts to this. It’s: where is he willing to go? And secondly, what are the two teams willing to do? But I do think there’s legitimate interest.”

Found out that Holland actually DID win something for the Oilers in his Nurse contract. I thought Holland was just 100% a pushover and let Nurse's agent get whatever he wanted, but Holland did win a fight for 1 thing. Unfortunately, it's something that makes it even harder to trade Nurse.
Most players obviously would want 100% of their singing bonuses paid out July 1st. Faster you can get your money the better. But Holland actually got Nurse's bonuses to be paid out through the year. His 6M bonus is paid in 3 part of 2M, paid Nov 15, Dec 15, Feb 15. So this huge win for Holland lets Katz spread out the payments instead of needing the full 6M ready July 1st.
Good job Holland, you are the man.
Unfortunately, us not paying him that 6M July 1st means that any team that we trade him to has to pay him the full 8M through next season. If we paid him out 6M July 1st, he would only cost 2M to his new team and would be a little more attractive to acquire.

A glance at current team caps.. our trading partners for Nurse are more towards the left :)
Hints from Stauffer that if Oilers don't get a fair trade they may wind up keeping Nurse..
I think he has value.. shouldn't retain on Nurse unless you get good value back in an NHL player.

Good. He needs to be gone already. Nurse's ridiculous contract handcuffed the team during their window and this trade talk is handcuffing the team during a critical offseason.
Thanks for everything you did for this team in the past Darnell, but it's time to go.

From Dobber Scout reports..
| Quote: |
OBSERVATIONS
March 2026 – Mukhamadullin is quietly settling into an NHL role. Four goals and 10 points in 35 games with only two healthy scratches in 2026 suggests San Jose has growing confidence in him, and his 17-21 minutes of ice time per night backs that up. He uses his size and length well in pockets – a big, tall, skating defender who doesn’t need to be elite to be useful, just reliable. The physical play could be ramped up for a player his size, but the blocked shots are a consistent bright spot. Not a top-pair defender – more of a steady four-five guy who won’t hurt you. With depth pieces like Vincent Desharnais and Nick Leddy likely moving on next season, Mukhamadullin appears poised to step into a more defined NHL role in his age-25 season. A dynasty hold in leagues with multi-category upside – blocks, some points, and hits if the physical game develops further. Ryan Downey
June 2025 – After missing camp with a groin injury, Muhamadullin came out of the gates slowly in the AHL. That being said, he was never known for his offensive prowess anyway. Over the last two years, he has shown that there is more offense than first thought, but his bread and butter remains that of a shutdown defenseman. He has size and elite shutdown potential, with some upside is there if paired with a puck-moving defenseman, like a Brent Seabrook. He’s looking like he will become a 30-point, 100-Hits player, but for a man his size he should ramp up the physical play. – Dobber
February 2023 – Mukhamadullin has been acquired by the San Jose Sharks in a blockbuster deal for Timo Meier, which saw him sent to the New Jersey Devils. The 21-year-old Russian defenseman has had a solid year in the KHL with 25 points in 67 games played with Salavat Yulaev Ufa. Curtis Rines
March 2022 – Mukhamadullin has been playing top minutes for Salavat Yulaev in the KHL this season again, but his production has stagnated. His three goals and four assists in 34 games, when compared with his 10 points in 39 games last year, don’t really scream “progression curve”. Especially when facing larger forwards, he continues to struggle in terms of separating the puck from its carrier, and his strength has very slightly improved but remains a setback. If he can come to the AHL in the next year or two, it’ll help him adjust his processing to the North American game. Hadi Kalakeche
October 2021 – Mukhamadullin has been continuing his development in the KHL with Salavat Yulayev and is off to a great start, with two goals and two assists in 12 games played on the team’s first pair. He’s been designated as the team’s power-play quarterback and utilizes his booming one-timer and great one-touch distribution in that role to put the puck in dangerous areas. If he can remain on the KHL team’s top pair and continue playing 20+ minute games overseas, he shouldn’t come anywhere near North America unless he can be guaranteed the same role and opportunities. Hadi Kalakeche
April 2021 – Shakir Mukhamadullin has spent the entire season in the KHL, in a more and more limited role as Ufa gradually sorted out their lineup along with the rest of the league. His 10 points in 39 games are far from outlandish but still show a decent ability to get involved offensively, especially in a men’s league. If he can build on this, dominate at next year’s World Junior tournament and arrive in North America with confidence, Mukhamadullin could become the first-round prospect the Devils think he is. Hadi Kalakeche
January 2021 – Mukhamadullin was hit-and-miss at the World Junior tournament, as Russia finished off the podium, losing to Finland in the bronze medal game. He benefited from ample playing time, testing his strengths on the first pair, the powerplay, and the penalty kill. It was obvious how raw Mukhamadullin is compared to his age group, and he will have a chance to show how fast he can grow in next year’s tournament, for which he will be eligible as a returnee. Hadi Kalakeche
December 2020 – Mukhamadullin has been invited to the 2021 World Juniors selection camp and is a shoo-in to make the cut. He will likely share the top pair with Daniil Chayka and Yan Kuznetsov and will try to show that he is the best Russian defensive prospect of his age group. Hadi Kalakeche
October 2020 – The Devils clearly loved what they saw from Mukhamadullin and decided to take him with the 20th overall pick, instead of trading down and risking him going to another team. Mukhamadullin’s size, reach and mobility allow him to pinch on both blue lines, snuffing out opposing breakouts and zone entries with comfort and intelligence. His stick positioning in the defensive zone is astute, but his physical play requires some improvement – he tends to bounce off players when initiating body checks, and rarely gets the player off the puck that way. His toolbox is quite extensive, as he can skate, pass, stickhandle or shoot his way out of trouble with ease. He has already proven his worth against men, with six points in fourteen games in the KHL with Ufa so far as he managed the impossible task of earning quality ice-time in the KHL as a teenager. Work needs to be put into his decision-making, but the same could be said of almost every defensive prospect available in this draft. He should develop into a fourth of fifth defenseman, although there is a slight chance he ends up on a top pair long-term. Hadi Kalakeche

Impressed Bowman got the full contract off the books. Shakir Mduh$$/&ehrhsjsh%^}%ddhe is a pure defensive D from the looks of it. Maybe our new coaching staff can give him the fundamentals to be effective at it. Lots of cap for bowman to do something. Hope he doesn’t just waste it on some more Skinners and Mangypainys

I think he's actually got more upside.. so far from what I've read he's got great mobilty and good speed.. plus size.. thats combinations we don't have right now in our D.. still only 24.. and he's played on a weak team for a a few years.. more than a throw in.. he was a 1st round pick by NJ.. #20 over all.

Just want the brain to work. Nurse is everything in one ear and out the other, and he just does his own thing and plays a game of reacting late to everything, praying his athleticism can make up for being late. Maybe this new kid can actually play some real competent defense. If not. At least we have another bunch of millions free to add some players that can bring a solid game.

I think the optimistic outlook is that this kid is still young and any bad habits he has now haven't been burned into his DNA yet.. I feel Nurse just couldn't change his habits anymore..
