Must harder player to replace than Dickinson. Like this contract a lot more. Well, I did, until remembered he's 33 years old haha. 5 years eh ...

Ryan Rishaug @TSNRyanRishaug
Sounds like Connor Murphy is extending with the Oilers. 5 years at 4.1m per season.

@TSNRyanRishaug
No trade for first three years then adjusts to 16 team list for remainder. Similar structure to Dickinson.

Lucky number is 5 this summer! Babcock probably will get 5 years too!

Same. Good value for Murphy now. Maybe less so at 36-38.

Yeah, last year or 2 might be meh, but with the push to move Nurse, definitely a player we had to try to keep. I can't see us replacing Murphy as a solid 2nd pair defensive guy for less than 4.1.

Yep I think it's a good deal. Gave the extra year or two to keep the cap down.

By all accounts this is a guys who is pretty dialed in on fitness and nutrition so could play well into his mid/late 30s. But honestly the last year or two of the deal are irrelevant to this team.

Now Kapanen..

Stay at home RHD.. not very fast.. but plays smart and effective defence.. he won't be carrying the puck very much..

If Walman comes back fat and slow like he was last year, our defence will be spending a lot of time in our own end.. Broberg would have been a good puck carrier (thanks Stan/JJ)

He like Dickinson were essentially UFA's I think trying to replace either with the same skill level on the current UFA market would have been at least 1M+ per and 5 years or more for term..

Being RHD Murphy's UFA market value was probably higher ..

Secures a couple of important positions.. now the real work comes.. I think Kapenen's agent will want something close to the same..

Hard to do your shopping in the UFA market when you have limited cap.. we really need to identify and procure younger talent via trade .. buy low.. but you need high level player assessment abilities to consider that.. similar to Carolina.. otherwise you get a guy like Fred for 8 years on a NTC for most of it.

Not thrilled with the NMC for the first 3 years, we are going to feel when he's 36 because he's not fast now over all.

Money is okay but he'll be 3rd pairing soon enough.

They will really need Wallman to come in like a bull on fire.

The very definition of insanity is doing the exact same thing expecting different results.

Generally Disappointed.

D group hinges on Walman, definitely. Especially if Nurse is moved.

Hopefully Babcock does a fitness/effort evaluation with Walman soon :)

Walman may also be the guy most at risk of friction with Babcock. Both personality wise, based on his issues with previous teams, and in terms of fitness.

I think Walman will be the hingepoint on the Oiler defence's season.. he was fat and slow last year.. 3rd pair at best.. Murphy was better in his own end..
Hopefully Walman has some professional pride and doesn't need the coach to embarrass him into doing the proper training expected of a 7M NHL defenceman.. if there aren't training camp reports saying how fit he looks, and quicker he moves, then you have your answer on Walman.. just punching a clock.

If that's the case the Oilers D will be much worse without Nurse here with no comparable return which I doubt Bowman can do.

Thats my fear.. if Walman was injured last year it might provide an explanation why he was so slow and ineffective.. but I don't think I ever heard any suggestions of injury.. he just looked fat and slow.. which I don't know how you do if you just missed winning teh Stanley Cup and you play side by side with so many driven players.. how do you not commit 100% to winning the Cup by getting better or at least not droping down.. plus you get a career contract and you aren't inspired to do your best to live up to it.

That contract is almost Nurse-level.

I'm hoping it was a top secret injury.. but I suspect he just wasn't fit enough to play top 4 D.

Brindamour wouldn't allow it.. you're fit or you sit.. and then eventually gone.

I don't know where all this Walman negativity is coming from - many commentators have mentioned lower body injuries affecting his play (core muscle issue? back?). Lowetide mentions it many times.

I don’t like either of these deals. Bowman is no different than Holland. Doesn’t understand age curve, is comfortable with the vets he knows, no desire to look for better options, offers huge term and NMC…

We are just cratering flexibility to improve the team so that we can have bottom 6 players and bottom pair defenseman locked well into their thirties. This makes no sense. This management team doesn’t dare to have ambition.

Clean house or bust
