The Bakersfield Condors have signed D Samuel Sjolund to a one-year AHL contract for the 2026-27 season.

Sjolund, 24, recently completed his collegiate career at Western Michigan University. The Stockholm, Sweden native had 76 points (13g-63a) in 119 games with the Broncos, helping the team to the 2025 NCAA National Championship. He was +32 combined over his past two seasons. Before Western Michigan, the 6’3″, 200 lbs. left-shot d-man had 35 points (9g-26a) in 56 games with the Dubuque Fighting Saints of the United States Hockey League.

He was originally selected in the fourth round (#111 overall) of the 2019 NHL Draft by the Dallas Stars.

Here is his Elite Prospects scouting report from his draft year..
Good read. c/w videos

Interesting connection to Broberg.. sould like because Broberg was playing with the top level club team no room.. so Sjolund played for the lower league club..

Samuel Sjölund had a quiet season for AIK in the J20 SuperElit. With Oilers’ future No. 8 pick, Philip Broberg, playing most of the season for AIK’s men’s team in HockeyAllsvenskan Sjölund was one of the players that saw an increase in ice-time and responsibility in the SuperElit.

After the club season, Sjölund was close to making Team Sweden’s roster for the U18 World Hockey Championship, but he was the last player to get cut before the tournament started. An interesting note about Sjölund is that he used to be a forward but now solely plays as a defenseman.

Scouting Report
Sjölund is a mobile defenseman with decent speed; he has quick first steps that allow him to stay mobile in all directions and to gain a bit of a push when he starts to move the puck. Over longer distances, Sjölund could add some speed, though.

Quote:

What Sjölund mainly needs to improve about his skating is to become stronger in his lower body and to add more power in his strides, as he often does not seem to get much push out of each step he takes while skating longer distances. Worth noting is that Sjölund is a good backward skater, both when it comes to the initial push and how smoothly he moves his feet to stay mobile

Title is misleading. The Condors, not the Oilers, signed him. Feeder leagues can sign players independent of their parent club.

Thats true.. I'll modify it.
Its not an NHL contract but isn't he essentially part of the organization now (AHL or NHL) and it's property? No other NHL team can sign him now for a year could they?

Players that sign an AHL only contract are NOT tied to the NHL franchise. He'd have to sign an NHL two way deal for that to be the case.
