Residence: Las Vegas, Nevada
Nationality: USA
Here's the latest .. Florida player Greer almost turns Connor Zary into a paraplegic.. only gets 3 games .. hate to see what he'd get in the "playoffs" .. a $5K fine?

McDavid gets 3 for high hut on Garland. Thought it was a bit harsh ….. confirmed. Brutal. That department needs to be overhauled. Both Gudas and Greer should be double digit suspensions.

That's a great comparison.
The 3 games McD got were for an incidental collision.. and had zero prior history..
Both Greer and Gudas hits were deliberate.. both had priors.. Gudas extensive.. both hits were far more dangerous.. Gudas blew up Matthew's knee.. and Greer could have put Zary in a wheel chair.
Here's Greer on Hoffman.. he likes to cross check.. he got ONE (1) game.

Despite years of questionable calls, he still has a job. So who is happy with how he's been running things - the owners or the players?
I can't imagine the players enjoy the lack of accountability, but maybe they do since the short suspensions mean they stand to lose less money? I also don't understand how the owners are happy with their players getting horrible injuries with little repercussions to the offender.
Someone must be happy with this, because if not, why is the DOPS still run the way it is?

Good question. Why is he (are they) still there?
Everyone can see the failure in decision equivalencies.. and the comical explanations provided.
.. you could say the same thing about the refereeing.. Why is it allowed to be so bad?
Maybe the "inconsistency" it provides is the "feature".. its left as an available tool for a few franchises to gain an advantage over others? .. like having a relative as the chief of police.. he's there if you need him.. .. and if you're not related you're on the short end.
Just a hypothesis :)

Vegas was his home town as well when he made Nurse the only guy in a decade to get the suspension after a late game instigator, for a fight the other guy was trying to get out of Nurse the entire game, in a game we were winning 4-1.
Parros revealed lots of people in DoPS are the exact same people that have been there from the start. There may be a whole bunch of people that stink at that job in charge that have honorary status (Parros alluded to this as well, talking about all the accolades these veteran members have), and they may have as much or more say than Parros does. So, just changing the figurehead might not even matter, the old boys club that are still there might have a hand in picking the replacement.
Seems like a department that just needs a full cleansing.

I feel like Colin Campbell still has his fingers all over that room too. Never a surprise when the Panthers guys' get off light.

Link to Yahoo story in 2010
Here's a story about Colin Campbells interference in NHL DOPS and referees with regards to his little boy Gregory.. Tyler Dellow wa steh one who put together the evidence.. associated emails from Campbell to Walkom and Murphy..
I didn't really look into this at the time but how the F does this guy have a job.. and/or escape criminal charges?
https://ca.sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nhl-puck-daddy/savard-emai ls-exposed-nhls-colin-campbell-corrupt--nhl.html?guccounter= 1&guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbS8&guce _referrer_sig=AQAAAF2EF51WbguY3dHL5W09wjR0y1XaDqz06rrP7Pvdvs DO09rFdlPWLgQhzArSp6p91669w66esi8sBtfTmmaahphotMf1kTMQWO-U-Q YYkxLeOaomxsszAvxGz88gJnhMHPxlXVVI_8oP4FJ_lW7fme9py8mwo5gRIp OfEHExNsol
Once you read how Campbell runs things at the NHL and DOPS you wouldn't be surprised the refs all look over their shoulders regarding employment..
The culture of NHL refereeing is based on personal bias.. leaking from the top down.
Here's some excerpts confirming how involved Campbell involves himself in individual judgements.. and the huge amount his personal bias and influence he injects into it. BTW the on-ice incident he interferes with in the emails is one between his son (Florida player) and Marc Savard (NYR) .. the one he calls a a "little fake artist" that "he coached in NY"..
He should have been fired in 2010.
Campbel email to Walkhom

Subject Re: Delayed Penalties/High Sticks 02/#/2007 4:24 pm
A bend in the road is a dead end if you round the corner and Dean Warren is standing there. Your answer re: his high stick calls and the score of the game were horse [bleep]. The 3rd call on [player] was while they were down 5 on 4 and on a def zone face off vs that little fake artist [player] I had him in [city] biggest faker going. And Warren fell for it when he grabbed his face on a face off. Your supposed to see the act, not call the embellishing act. Dean Warren has to go with [referee] There must be a way to get rid of this guy. Is there a way we can tract (sic) and total minors called by referees this year. We could then get the minors they call per game. ... or with 2 [referees on the ice] it is impossible? Warren and [referee] out of [club's] games. Give them to [referees].
|
Another email regarding same incident..
| Quote: | Re [player]
Colin Campbell to Stephen Walkom, Mike Murphy 02/#/2007 09:21 AM
I know Murph and Kinger like [player] as a player but my view of him is this exactly...he puts his whining ahead of the game. I don't think this is a regular occurrence (.....getting screwed) and .....exploded .........over the disallowed goal. He may be uncontrollable by .............and.................as I think his frustration level has hit a high point. He hates officials as well. He is still pissed off at [referee] for a call he missed in the playoffs years ago as I remember him bugging Murph about it. Let's give him Warren and [referee] than (sic) he will really have something to whine about.
|
Another interference with the refs regarding his son.. just a regular season game .. and at the end of a game.. and he didn't even see it.. he heard it on the radio.. freaking bizarre.
| Quote: | Dellow even found another instance of Campbell complaining about a call against his son: Nov. 13, 2007, in which Colin Campbell wrote to Walkom, "90 seconds left and he calls a weak penalty...tripping. Makes me sick." The tripping call, according to the box score, was on Gregory Campbell; Colin Campbell wrote that he had not seen the penalty but heard radio announcers say "it was a bull[bleep] call."
|
This was written by Jack Edwards regarding Campbell (Bruin play by play guy)
| Quote: | As Jack Edwards of NESN wrote in his ode to Colin Campbell back in 2009:
The only person who seems to understand Colin Campbell's pattern of punishment is Campbell himself. The suspensions he hands down are arbitrary and erratic -- swayed by non-evidence, hunch, gut feelings, anecdotes and back-channel influence peddlers -- and they are almost never clearly explained. He establishes precedent and contradicts it. He makes exceptions based on flawed premises and then concludes his arguments illogically and capriciously. No one, no one, knows what is allowed and what is not allowed. It is Dartboard Justice.
Perhaps there is someone patrolling the highways and byways of hockey that has the ability to establish standards of punishment; to draw a clear line that everyone understands; to communicate effectively with players, coaches, managers and fans; and to make the NHL a fair and safe place for the world's most exciting athletes. But Colin Campbell is not that someone.

Here's another article about Campbell (I never knew there was so much evidence out there.. how is this guy still employed?
https://dailyhive.com/calgary/nhl-leaked-emails-concussions
| Quote: | Bettman’s email: “I have to give a speech tomorrow in toronto. Did you tell me that we had 35 concussions last year from hits to the head? How are you feeling?”
From: Colin Campbell
Sent: 11/09/2008 03:52 PM EST
To: Gary Bettman
Subject: Re: Hits to head
Yes…those were the numbers Kinger used. I am confirming those right now with Kris. We had a hit from behind last on Toronto (Kotsoplous on Van Ryn). Kotsopoulous received a 5 min penalty and kicked out of game.. Toronto scored. Van Ryan is a woos and soft but he ended up with a broken nose and broken hand. He should be penalized and suspended for putting himself in a bad position. We are having a hearing tomorrow for Kotspoulos.

This one gives you a glimpse how the NHL Corp. controls the media.. no wonder there is so little on air criticism of refs and suspensions. Just confirms what everyone knows.
| Quote: | 5. Campbell reacts to comments from Brett Hull
This exchange between Campbell and an NBC producer might provide insight into how he and Bettman must have reacted every time Ron MacLean said something disparaging about the league on Hockey Night in Canada.
After Brett Hull said Campbell and Bettman are trying to remove fighting from the NHL, Campbell emailed Sam Flood, the producer, and he wasn’t complimentary to Hull.
How does the NHL react when a broadcaster says something they disagree with?
From: CCampbell@nhl.com
To: Flood, Sam (NBC Universal); gbb602@nhl.com
Sent: Sun Mar 25 14:18:32 2007
Subject: Re: Hull
At least, at least have him talk to me before he says I and Gary want to get rid of fighting. Not the case at all. He can’t assume. I like the fact he has the balls (or is nuts) to say what he feels but UNLIKE Charles Barkley, he does not do his homework or is just plain dumb.
Flood’s response:
The call will be made from now will insist.
So much for the media being kept at an arm’s length.

There's a lot more emails in this article.. but they were screen shot images in the original article that seem to have been deleted or link broken..

BTW.. the original blog post of Tyler Dellow c/w all the emails from Campbell seem to be scrubbed from the internet.
Dellow was able to get the original emails because they became public during a Ontario Human Rights court case by ex NHL ref Dean Warren vs. the NHL. Campbell had him fired. So the emails are real.
Here's a Ontario Human Rights case judgement of ex-ref Dean Warren vs. the NHL .. Campbell got Warren fired. (refer to email from Campbell previously above)
So NHL refs being scared of getting fired is real.. and its not adherence to the rule book that is of prime concern.. the strings are pulled tightly on the on-ice puppets.
