For a 2nd round pick. Chicago retains 50% of Murphy's salary (leaving 2.2M for us)
Bowman staying in his comfort zone going after a Blackhawk.
Pure defensive D. Spends all his years with endless defensive zone starts. Still manages to be Chicago's best xGF% D this season, which is surprising.

Just pissing away more picks. This one has to be from what 2029, because we’ve traded all the rest? Is this guy even going to move needle at all, or is this just another Frederick?

Doesn’t seem to be bad deal. Pissing away picks us better than giving up some of our prospects who are knocking on the door and having promising AHL seasons imo.

Agreed. I don't mind this trade at all. I've been a Connor Murphy fan for a while; mobile, big, defensively-minded D-man that likely pushes Nurse to the bottom pairing. Finally. I'd run Walman with Murphy.

We traded away a guy who might be in the NHL in 5-6 years for a guy that can help us now. This isn't a great year, and it probably isn't going to change our fate, but if we stop trying then we all may as well stop caring about the Oilers at all.

We suck at drafting, so that makes losing picks hurt less :)

Its a solid move for a guy thats a rental, with no cap going into next season. At worse it's a move that's not great but not bad either.
And The Oilers need to win now while they still have McDavid under contract because they're is no guarantee he will resign with the club after 2028?

He won't. These are the last couple of years that he will be in Edmonton. We need to win now and maybe we get 3 more out of him. If we continue to lose when it counts most, he will go to somewhere that doesn't. I could see him going to Tampa or L.A. in 2028.
5 Cups and counting.

I really hope it's Walman-Murphy on the 2nd pair, and this takes a lot of pressure off having to play Nurse.
Walman is not great defensively, never has been, but with a pure defensive partner he maybe starts to open up his offensive game and build confidence again. There is zero opportunity to do that with a partner that is always out of position and creating chaos in your own end like NUrse.

I'm hoping it's Walman and Murphy as well. Nurse is a tire fire right now and needs to play extremely limited minutes.

I agree with this. If Murphy comes as advertised he might help stabilize Walman. Walman can be a lesser exciting Bouchard, for good and bad. Watching this year it feels like Walman is trying to do too much and it is leading to bad decision making and over playing situations. This is the same thing that happens to Bouchard.
Murphy might allow Walman to relax and play his game without trying to do too much.

My guess:
Ekholm - Bouchard
Nurse - Murphy
Walman - Emberson
It does balance out the RH/LH defensemen.

I guess practice today was:
Walman - Bouchard
Nurse - Emberson
Ekholm - Stastney
Assuming Murphy slots in for Stastney. That Walman - Bouchard pairing could be adventurous.

Were those practice lines made to put the fear of god into Bowman and force him to make a trade? :)

Lots of positive chatter about him, looking forward to a right shot stay at home D.

Friend just texted me, saying Murphy is Chicago's top penalty killer, and Chicago currently has the number 1 PK in the league.

Bouchard - Ekholm
Murphy - Walman
Emberson - Stastney
Nurse - Popcorn
I'd rather have OEL.. but Leafs are likely holding out for a huge return.. I'm sure we asked about him.. I'd have used our 1st + Howard and (?) .. OEL is only at $3.5M for 2 more years.. still playing top minutes..

This is the kind of trade that smart teams make. There is plenty of firepower on the Oilers. Chance prevention and goaltending are the biggest contributors to losses.
Murphy has some elite shut down numbers and is a consistent PK contributor. A 2028 second has very little value.
Add in the 50% retained and this has the potential to be a big win for the Oilers. Not a sexy name or massive deadline acquisition but this is the kind of trade fans will look back on and appreciate.

IMO I'd still try to get OEL.. need better defence.. he's only at $3.5M .. retain 50% and use the 2027 1st.. anything to get #25 in the press box.

When you say better defence do you been better defending? If so, I agree but I disagree in thinking that OEL would be any solution to that. He has rarely been a good defender recent years and is getting worse as he has slowed significantly the last few years.
I know the hatred for Nurse has made many want anything to happen but this isn't it.
I am always for trading picks to help win now but if they spent a 1st on OEL I would be livid. Adding Murphy should be a big win for the defending need. I would rather see the Oilers add another shutdown D or forward depth if they are going to make more trades (assuming of course a legit solution to the goalie problem cant be found)

The major problem I have with this trade is that the Oilers pro scouting staff identified Connor Murphy as someone they needed to bring in. The same pro scouts that targeted Jarry, Frederick, Mangiopani, Skinner, Arvidson etc and didn't think that Brett Kulak was worth keeping around. You have to assume that this is going to be a major flop but also that they'll sign him to a long term deal before they realize.
