Adam Schefter@AdamSchefter
ESPN sources: The LA Kings have acquired standout forward Artemi Panarin from the NY Rangers in exchange for a conditional third-round pick and prospect Liam Greentree, per me and
@emilymkaplan

Rangers also retain 50% of his salary

Holland breaks his own rule that you're not allowed to squeeze anyone, even if the player gets to hand pick their destination.

Hilarious return by Drury.

The first round series against them is going to be more interesting.

Certainly would expect them to climb back up now. 4 points back of us with 3 games in hand.

I wanna see what contract Holland gives Panarin as he approaches 35 this year to feel better about all this.

Well sheet. That doesn't make me feel better. Neither of these events are Ken Holland-like compared to his time here, the trade or the extension.

Guess Panarin demanding the Kings as the only option as a pending UFA is unique vs anything GM's deal with here.

Sounds like Panarin dug his feet in and would only accept a trade to LA. Have always seen comments around him that he only wants to play in big cities and live the big city life. So possible that New York and LA are the only places he's actually willing to play if he gets to choose.

Apparently Panarin's agent wanted min. 4- 5 year extension with every other team that they considered.. LA was the only one that they considered only a two year .. so .. if that's the case I'm glad Oilers didn't get him and then extend for 10 to 11 x 5 years.. if Oilers were even on the list of contenders..

So basically an extra $33M commitment to make up for your city not letting him party as well as he can in New York or LA. No thanks. That would have taken him to 40 years old.

Drury is really bad at this. Announcing publicly that they didn't want to re-sign Panarin and then benching him entirely put them completely over a barrel. They forced themselves in to a corner and then they had no leverage to make him go anywhere else.

Apparently all our criticism of Holland made him realize that he shouldn't just pay whatever was asked for a player who only has your name on his no-move exception list.

Worst case scenario really, seeing him join a divisional rival for cheap and at not a bad contract either.

Holland is back in his comfort zone I guess. Panarin wanted so badly to play in the next biggest US city that he would sign on a shorter term and for less money than anywhere else. Saw claims from Friedman that Seattle offered him 4 x 14M and that wasn't enough for him to give up going to LA.

I'm not rich enough to understand millionaire life in a huge city, but I guess Panarin can't give whatever it's about up, and that gave Holland the kind of easy mode he was used to in Detroit with a team full of HHoF players and no cap.

Not too concerned overall though about the Kings going forward though. This was a once in a decade thing for Kenny. He can keep adding Ceci's to the Kings and trading away good young players to keep his team nice and old.

I'm curious what the Oilers did here, if anything.

Given he was greenlighted to talk to anyone, if I'm GM I'm selling hard probably on just come here, no contract, finish the year, win a Cup, make a gazillion in the summer.

Given what the Kings paid for him (AT 50% RETAINED TOO!) we could definitely have found a deal that worked for the Rangers if we could have got his attention.

He's apparently even friends with Podkolzin.
