This version of Team Canada is awful.. going to OT with freaking Latvia.. gave up the tieing goal with a minute left.. IMO a lot of high drafted prospects on TC are dropping in value.. even McKenna looking mediocre.

TC has two forward lines, rest are plumbers.

Surprised how TC's speed seems so average..

I think a problem with Hockey canada is that some kids that separate themselves when they are younger in the Team Canada program U-17.. U-18.... stay on top of Hockey Canada's radar even though they may already have started to fall back to their peer group once they get up to the U-20 group..

Haven't been impressed with a lot of the players so far.. one of those unimpressive players is Mertone.. he was big as a kid and his size and speed stood out amongst his young peers.. .. now not as much..
Misa was supposed to be elite.. he was playing for SJ.. but he hasn't stood out either.

I think Iginla has looked good, Mckenna.. Hage, Martin.. they stand out.. make stuff happen.. rest are looking very average.

I didn't pay much attention to the selection process here - did we leave a bunch of good offensive players off the team and do that weird Team Canada thing where they think we need role players?

I didn't see today's game but against the Czechs they didn't look dangerous if the top two lines weren't on. And Hunter making some odd choices with his PP. He's tried to balance out the two units, so you don't have any time with all the best players on the ice.

I didn't like some of the antics from the Canadian team too - getting in to it before the game with Czech players and then the unsportsmanlike tap from the captain after he scored the empty net game. In games where you're the massive favourite, maybe just focus on getting business done.

Yeah the unsportsmanlike was Martone.. he's the freaking capatin.. guy is brainless.. classic where a kid is on team canada all the way up through his youth then loses the sense of accountability..

You weren't wrong .. basicly two lines have any danger of scoring and the bottom 6 struggle to make any contributions at all.. these are supposed to be the character type guys that were supposed to energise the team.. forecheck and cycle the puck.. build momentum.. problem is they are just average skaters.. can't hit anyone because they can't get there in time. . kinda like the Oiler bottom 6 .. like the NHL.. TC needs speed as a core requirement of any roster player.. even these stiff Latvians were keeping up to them.

I just don't understand the thinking. If you have four lines that could be first lines in any other league, then if you're matching lines with a team like Latvia or Germany or the Czechs or even Sweden or the US, your depth should be able to outscore their depth. You remain a threat at every point of the game.

Does it mean you need good players to PK? Yes - but surely there's 6 guys on the team that do that on a regular basis for their teams. And it means you can counter-punch even short-handed.

Who needs energy guys? These are a bunch of 18 and 19-year olds playing on the biggest stage of their lives. They're going to come out like they've been shot out of a cannon. In a lot of the WJHCs, the issue is more keeping the energy controlled and smart so they don't get a lot of dumb penalties. I don't think grind lines are a great idea for international play.

Other teams would kill for the ability to pick so many great scoring forwards and Team Canada so regularly shoots itself in the foot on this. And then we'll point to the one goal the grinder contributed in the whole tournament and claim that was the spark the team needed...

Just think, in the next week we're likely to get to roll our eyes about the couple grinders that Canada felt it needed on its Olympic roster too.

"Thinking that a bad team's best players are the reason the team is bad is the "Tambellini re-signing Lennart Petrell" of sports opinions." @Woodguy55
