Hilariously (maybe not really hilarious), already articles popping up wondering about buying out this stiff.

https://www.oilersdaily.com/nhl-team/edmonton-oilers/how-muc h-would-it-cost-the-edmonton-oilers-to-buyout-trent-frederic

Apparently the 3rd most searched for buyout. In case you’re wondering, we would get between $1.3m and $1.8m in savings for the next 7 years, and then almost a $1m hit for the next 7 years after that.

What an absolutely idiotic contract. Completely unforced error.

1) NOBODY was giving him a 4 year deal anywhere, let alone AN 8 YEAR DEAL!!!!
2) NOBODY was giving him anywhere close to $3m, nevermind almost $4m. FOR 8 YEARS!!!!
3) and a NMC!!!

I wasn’t using hyperbole in the other thread - I’ve seen more from Clattenberg in 2 games than in 50 Frederic games combined. Guy is just a ghost.

Lucic for Chia
nurse for Holland
Frederic for Bowman

Right of passage for an Oilers GM is signing a horrid deal with NMC where at least 80% of the term fans spend all their time dreaming the player could waive and be traded.

MacT offered Clarkson more than the Leafs did, so it’s really David Clarkson’s fault MacT didn’t have one too.

Bowman I guess signed the cheapest of such deals, but he also achieved a new record time in fans all wishing the players could disappear.

Frederick isn't getting any better I'm afraid.. he's in his prime.. but his skating is awful.. no hands.. not that tough.. and brings zero intensity.. he's a plug .. the kind a guy you want to replace .. except we're stuck with him for 8 years..

All we can hope for here is a Connor Brown-style rejuvenation. Brown's first season was a complete disaster, and people really came around on him (even though he never provided a lot of offence). If we're lucky, Frederic gets going and fans allow themselves to forget the contract for a bit. But we all know it's not good.

I tend towards the rose-coloured glasses approach in considering Oiler players and prospects .. but in C. Browns case at least he showed some speed and agility.. Fred by comparison looks slow and clumsy.. last year I attributed it to his injury and lack of time for proper recovery.. now ? .. finding it hard to conjure up explanations/excuses..

Guess you're right all we have is hope.

I don'tremember him in Boston before he was an Oiler.. just now.. but find it hard to believe he was much different before.. in which case what was the pro-scout group analytic process on him? .. that process could be a worry.

Oilers fan life. Praying that mediocre players can one day live up to massive overpay deals they were stupidly given. And of course experience it never happening lol.

I think people forget HOW bad that first while was with Connor Brown. There were many here calling for the team to demote him to the AHL before his bonus money for games played hit because it was so bad.

He was coming off an injury, and so is Frederic, so maybe there's better to come. Even if that's hopelessly optimistic.

It was very bad. I thought he should be demoted. I hated that they kept pushing a player who was probably not in the lineup on merit. It kind of turned around later in the year, and then Brown did the Oilers a solid and gave them a team friendly deal after a player friendly deal the year before.

With Frederic, there's no team friendly deal coming. It's 8 years of him at that cap hit. Hopefully it isn't as bad as it is now, but I'm not optimistic it is at any point going to be a contract that looks remotely okay. But any improvement will be welcomed, because he has been awful, and that contract is awful too.
