Everyone that isn't part of "the core" are simply placeholders without real roles. PK is for our Stars because it's such a lethal card within the deck. 97 & 29 are averaging 23 minutes per night, leading all NHL forwards in ice time. Hyman is fourth, but only 3 games played. Every season Knoblauch plays our stars 23+ minutes down the stretch with no rest entering the playoffs and have had deep runs to the finals 2x in a row now. The rest of the team has no quality ice time to put them into situations to grow or get comfortable with linemates, while the stars get worn to the nub playing half the game. Today you're playing with Fredric, tomorrow you will be with Janmark, Saturday...who knows. Chemistry is just a word this team doesn't know right now. Everything is reactionary with this coach now. Down a goal? McDrai. People complain that too many players rely on McDavid and Draisaitl to save the day. Gee, I wonder why? They should just go into the game cold with a new linemate and save the day every second night? Not that easy, as anyone that's played the game would understand.
Is the tail is wagging the dog in this room? Is this "one trick pony" approach KK is using the wishes of his star players? That's a bold thought, but KK wasn't quite this way when he was first hired. He's the worst offender of any previous coach now. Every favorable situation or hint of adversity requires a double shift from somebody. He doesn't even need to point or nod anymore.
They are wearing these 2 players right out. Not to mention exposing them to more likelihood of injury. Especially on the PK... should they actually get in the way of a shot.
EDIT: And they need a goalie. Don't care who at the moment. These stiffs are not the tandem to a cup. Combined they have an .857 save %. Worst in the NHL. The Oilers "starter" needs some competition for his position. Pickard isn't supplying that.
