The thing is it was entirely predictable given his playoff performance and age. They easily could have avoided doing the typical Oiler thing of waiting for his value to crater before being forced to move on. They could have traded him this off season and probably got decent value but even if not there was zero rush to re-sign him. I don't expect their are going to be too many teams looking to give him 3 years after this season.
