Don't think anything special in this deal. Just makes sure he gets as much money as possible up front with the avg of 12.5M, buyout and lockout proof, which every big player gets now. Base salary just follows the min allowed.

OK.. I think NHL contracts normally get paid out monthly or bi-weekly.. so he probably just gets all that money on game #1 in one lump sum and he invests it and makes money on it earlier.

Think most players just get their signing bonus July 1st. Dif arrangements can be made, but most guys just get that chunk of cash ASAP.
Definitely better to be paid as much as possible up front. Big boys agents have been helping with that for long time now.
