Jake Walman, signed to a 7x$7M extension by EDM, is a puck-moving offensive defenceman with a hard shot. Has had a tumultuous few seasons but his one-man break-out game was a good fit with the Oilers and he should be a staple of their second pair for years to come.

I'm okay with it, but he hasn't been healthy in all 82 games since in his professional career. That's a red flag.
The very definition of insanity is doing the exact same thing expecting different results.

I like Jake Walman, but he is a player I would have preferred be 4 years. $7M feels high, but with the rising cap I think that is about standard. Doesn't feel like there is any discount here.

I think with the cap being $113M 2 years into his new contract, that 7M might eventually be value.. but I guess we'll see.. the 7 years could be a benefit or a curse to the Oilers.. he's 1 year younger (29) than Nurse .. and he's a decent top 4 right now.. which in this current market seems to get fairly large contracts.. I think Bowman is trying to build a stable foundation for the roster for the next few years so there will not be too many contract balls in the air at any one season.. something to sell to McDavid.
