Sounds like short term and under 15M AAV.

McDavid doing what he can to give us cap space to compete for the next 3 or so years. If we squander it again, might be the true ending to his time here.

edit: Spector saying 2 years and under 14M actually. guess we'll see.

Two years AT TWELVE AND A HALF MILLION PER YEAR!!! That's an incredible team-friendly deal. They better get it done - and ask everyone else to leave money on the table too now.

Got a feeling that McDavid and Drai might still be the only ones doing that. Maybe lump Nuge in there too.

Looks like it's a 3 year cup or bust window.

I don't know how anyone can be pissed about this in Edmonton. That's quite a statement.

It is really going to make me uneasy when TO starts doing house cleaning for cap space in the second year of this Oiler deal though. Please Connor, don't do it. I want to keep loving you..

Edmonton Oilers @EdmontonOilers
THE CAPTAIN 🫡

The #Oilers have signed forward Connor McDavid to a two-year contract extension with an AAV of $12.5 million!

Welp, excuse deleted for being able to win the next 3 years. McDavid just completely passing on cash in to try to win.

I'm glad we don't have to spend the rest of this season talking about it, but we'll be back to square one soon enough. Although I guess not really. The cup has to come here in the next two (maybe 3) seasons or he's absolutely gone.

The Oilers owe it to him to get this done. He left a crapload of money on the table. Huge risk if he ever gets injured. Build this guy a winning team plz.

Like.. McD left major cash on the table to win now.

He gave a major hometown discount to win. You cannot fault him for that, and Oilers brass better have a solid damn plan to make them win now.

He simply maintains his salary for 2 more years after this one. It's a huge olive branch to the team, it's fans and to the NHL that in order to win he will do whatever it takes.

Now win.

The very definition of insanity is doing the exact same thing expecting different results.

Wow fantastic deal for the Oilers and Mcdavid backing up his talk about winning being the top priority. Can't really ask for a more team friendly deal if you're the Oilers. Make it count.

This is what its all about..

Oilers have room to bring in skilled people.. that aren't expecting lottery wins in a contract.. guys that just want to win.. and the leader leads by example.. McDavid is taking $7M less what he's worth in order to win.. and giving Bowman a hand up.. lots of room to deal.. no room for lottery seekers.

We won't know what McDavid's true long term intentions are for another 2 years now, but I really hope this contract pushes Katz and his band of merry men to a new level of urgency that they have never felt before about winning. Even if McDavid is still thinking in the back of his mind he wants to keep signing here and try to win with his friends, he must know the ongoing risk of him going ramps up the pressure, which is a great thing.

Fix the damn goaltending fellas.

This is probably best case for other big name players too. If McDavid wasn't signing a top of league deal to set a new bar, the alternative is he just signs a deal that everyone agrees is an outlier and not really useful for any comparison. Kirill, capitalizing on Minny's desperation, really made this easy, because so many players around the top 2 tiers can try to use his 17M now to negotiate

Current top cap hits for 26/27.

Kirill Kaprizov $17,000,000

Leon Draisaitl $14,000,000

Auston Matthews $13,250,000

Nathan MacKinnon $12,600,000

Connor McDavid $12,500,000

Mitchell Marner $12,000,000

Mikko Rantanen $12,000,000

Elias Pettersson $11,600,000

Erik Karlsson $11,500,000

William Nylander $11,500,000

I think what its turning out to be is that every team is a different market.. some are desperate to have a top player stay in their org.. some are building Cup winners..
McDavid wants to build a Cup winner. 3 year cycle begins Wednesday

This is a fantastic deal for the team and gives them a chance to win for a couple more years.

This also cements McDavid as a player who is willing to do whatever it takes to win. If the Oilers can't do it with him in the next 3 years then he deserves a chance somewhere else. Or maybe if the Oilers are still contenders at that point, he just signs again (which honestly I think is his preference).

They'll have $22M in cap space next year with roster listed above.. (cap is $104M)
Bowman will have to earn his paycheque.

Cap will be $113M in 3 years (McDavid's lat) .. then he'll just adjust.. and sign for a little bit more based on the next cap limits..

Don't think anything special in this deal. Just makes sure he gets as much money as possible up front with the avg of 12.5M, buyout and lockout proof, which every big player gets now. Base salary just follows the min allowed.
