Stauffer telegraphing some roster moves..

Quote:

Bob Stauffer@Bob_Stauffer

Can forsee a scenario where the @EdmontonOilers carry Matt Savoie, Isaac Howard, David Tomasek, Noah Philp and Alec Regula on their opening day roster.

EDM needs internal growth and development from those players and for that matter Vasily Podkolzin and Ty Emberson as well.

Do all of those players but Tomasek needs waivers to be demoted? Certainly the early returns on all of them have been decent, but they're playing against scrubs and half-speed vets, so hard to tell for sure where they're at.

EDIT - I think Tomasek needs waivers too. He's looked like a player so far though.

No, Howard, Savoie, Tomasek are all waiver exempt.. but I doubt Tomasek will sit in Bako for long.. if at all.. he's got a Swede option sittin' there..

They'd lose Regula and Philp on waivers guaranteed.

I'd give Philp a spot just on merit.. really smart player, strong stick, decent wheels, good fore-check, and can PK.. and he's 6'-4" .. he learned a lot about positional/defensive play while with UofA I'd imagine.. its rubbed off .. similar to Derek Ryan.

I think the only guy of teh 3 that are waiver expempt that might get sent down is Howard.. Savoie has a spot on merit.. and Tomasek looks like an NHL option .. plus likely has an agreement with the Oil that its NHL or a ticket home before he came over.. so probably not sent down..

Matt Tomkins on waivers today. His starts weren't great in pre-season which isn't everything. He's got to be disappointed though to be gone this early with other goalies still in camp, as he's a 31-year old AHL all-star. If he's not at least the third string then it could be bad news for him.

McDrai just destroying the Canucks farm boys tonight.

Skinner remains painful to watch.

Sliding out of position on his first goal, goes down early too.

Spinning towards the back of his net for some unknown reason opening space for a deflection in front to more easily go in. Just giving himself zero chance to react, or just simply cover along the ice.

Fun season ahead!

Skinner might look different, but his play absolutely isn't. Same old, same old. .750 and .893 games in the preseason. Stu, that just simply isn't good enough against B-level squads. Figure yourself out or get out of the way.

That's the 2nd goal .. he's 6'-4" .. plays positional ..not reaction.. usually goes down early to "take away the bottom of the net" with the post to post "V" .. yet on this one his legs aren't covering the net for a the chance from a deflection..? be consistent bud.

The 360 spin before the goal was really impressive though. I can see the speed he gained losing those 15 lbs. I guess if he was 15lbs heavier, he might have been still facing the inside of his net as it went in.

Lol this is how I'll always remember Skinner when he is in the ECHL in a couple of years.

Still nice pre-season warm up for the best player in the world. McDavid looked pretty good too.

I've been trying to see Skinner and drown out the noise that he is regressing. Looking at he last two outings against the B squads and I'm like.. I think he got worse.

Pickard was decent in the jets game, never panicked for a moment, got the shutout too.

No way Skinner last the year.. no way.

Eight more players cut today:

On waivers: Cam Dineen, Riley Stillman

To Bakersfield: Leppanen, Hutson, Samaski, Hamblin, Marjala, Clattenburg

Still here:

2 goalies: Skinner, Pickard

8 Dmen: Bouchard, Ekholm, Emberson, Kulak, Nurse, Regula, Stetcher, Walman

15 forwards: Draisaitl, Frederic, Henrique, Howard, Janmark, Jones, Kapanen, Lazar, Mangiapane, McDavid, Nugent-Hopkins, Philp, Podkolzin, Savoie, Tomasek

So at least 2 more cuts needed (and one more when Hyman returns).

Tough choices ahead for the management group as I think everyone still here has shown something. Waiver eligibility may play a big part (Regula not being exempt will likely keep him here for now). Both Howard and Savoie are exempt, so I could see both (or at least one) being sent down.

I think Jones is automatic.. then Lazar.. Stetcher.. ?

They have to keep Regula for now.. he's looked good so far.. he'd be snatched in a waiver claim.. probably a reclaim by Boston for sure..

Tomasek is not waiver eligible.. but I think his arrangement with Oilers is its either NHL or back to Ikea country.

Lazar has been OK.. but his wheels are average.. he could slip through waivers..

Stetcher plays a solid defense.. and low low cost.. he might get picked up by a weak team..

If Philp is ready to be an NHLer, I don't know why you'd need Lazar. I'm sending him and Jones down. I think the new guys are all better players.

We get the full court press with our last pre-season game tonight:

Draisaitl - McDavid - Frederic
Podkolzin - Nugent-Hopkins - Mangiapane
Henrique - Philp - Savoie
Howard - Tomasek – Kapanen

Ekholm - Bouchard
Nurse - Stecher
Kulak - Emberson

Skinner
Pickard

So it's Janmark, Lazar, and Jones getting scratched up front and Walman and Regula on the back end. I know Walman's banged up, but are the others candidates for the final cuts--or possibly nursing some injuries? I have to think Lazar and Jones will soon be on waivers and Bakersfield bound.

This lines look so offbalance and weird to me. I guess we will see.

Savoie and Howard sure not being set up to succeed; if their numbers are low come February, we are probably going to hear about how they failed to live up to the expectations and hopes the Oilers had for them, all while toiling away on the third and fourth line with Philp and Kapanen.

At the other extreme is Podkolzin, who continues to get bumped into the Top-6 despite a career high of 24 points, and somewhat limited finish in his career so far. And Oilers management really want their Frederic bet to pay off.

I mean here's my line combinations:

Mangiapane - McDavid - Nugent-Hopkins
Frederic - Draisaitl - Savoie
Howard - Henrique - Tomasek
Podkolzin - Philp - Kapanen

Again though, don't want to read too much into this, and willing to let it play out.

I think Freddy will eventually drop down to 3rd line.. from what I've seen so far..
Savoie will eventually rise to top 6

Eventually;

Mangiapane - McDavid - Hyman
Podkolzin - Draisaitl - Savoie
Howard - Nugent-Hopkins - Frederic
Henrique - Philp - Tomasek

Rotate these guys as required.. if all still here..
Janmark Lazar Kapanen
