Objection. Facts not in evidence.

I don't have any inside info but Mcdavid isn't an idiot. He knows the affect that playing this season without a contract will have on the team and the city. He isn't going to learn anything about the city or organisation in November or December that he doesn't already know. There is zero benefit to dragging this out unless he's already decided that he's leaving.
The good news is that if he doesn't sign before the season, maybe his buddy Nurse will waive his nmc too. Mcdavid will need a bag carrier wherever he goes.

It is feeling a lot like we're on the Tavares glide slope. In Jan 2018 he told the Islanders his intention was to sign...In June he was meeting with 6 different teams. On July 1 everyone got a pic of his Leaf's pjs and he inked a $77m 7yr deal.

It is surprising that none of the big fish for next year's UFA class β McDavid, Makar, Eichel, Connor, Kaprizov, Panarin, Robertson β have reached extensions this summer. Wonder if there is a bit of a holding pattern and that others are waiting for someone (probably McDavid) to set the market. Wonder if McDavid doesn't want to sign a deal only to have Panarin or Kaprizov sign for more. I'm not sure, but while I don't have good feelings about McDavid not being signed, it sort of seems like nobody has locked up their UFAs for next summer.

I think he has internal pressure from himself to make the best deal for him and the team. In addition, the NHLPA also has to pressuring him to make a deal that helps everyone and resets the market with the growing cap after years of relative no movement.
I donβt think this is a cut and dry negotiation.

How come no one is asking Jack Eichel 10 times a week about his plans?

He doesn't play in a Canadian market and people trust Vegas' management to be focused on winning.

Also Mcdavid is better and more important then Eichel. Also if Eichel walks than Vegas turns around and signs Mcdavid or Kaprisov or whoever they want really.
Which superstars are signing with the (Canadian) Edmonton Oilers if/when Mcdavid leaves? They are insanely lucky that The Real Captain already signed for 8 more years. Otherwise imagine what they would be looking at.
No one really cares in Vegas and even if they did it wouldn't really matter that much.

Yes, Connor in Edmonton is different, but it is interesting how much of a story Kaprizov is compared to Eichel.
That UFA group actually is wild. In addition to the three above, also unsigned going in to their final year are Kyle Connor, Artemi Panarin, Martin Necas, Adrian Kempe...Getting any of those guys for just money could be transformational for a team.

Imagine Mcdavid resigns for a decent price and Kempe comes here

My 2 cents are this. McDavid signs a 3 year deferred contract at the max of $19.1 M. Deferred structure is almost exact blueprint that Vatrano did for his contract with the Ducks. It is half deferred each year spread out over 10 years for each year starting the deferred payment in 2035.
So if McDavid does the roughly same. would be $2,985,000 paid each year starting in or around 2035. That gets the cap hit to roughly $15,450,000 per year for those 3 years. I think he is waiting on two things to sign....first he is waiting to get the extensions done for certain players...(Podkolzon, Ekholm & Walman) Second he is waiting to see how this team looks early in the year. I would guess roughly until US Thanksgiving. If he sees a solid start he will resign.
Take a look at PuckPedia and the deferred contract of Frank Vatrano. It is the blueprint to maximize the contract value, which keeps the NHLPA happy, Keep the cap # low and put some dollars down the road when he is retired.
This is the last season you can sign a deferred contract. There is no minimum/maximum for a deferred contract. The only stipulation is that when you start the deferred payment you have to make it continuous each year after.
