Don't worry, Pickard rewarded the team for their faith in him with the all-important pre-season shutout over Winnipeg. We're in good hands now.

Josh Brown already earned his salary for year 2/3 of his deal with a fight tonight.

Pickard is just gonna do his thing. Not a huge talent, but he will just grind along giving average backup goalie performances, and here and there put in great efforts. I worry much more about the other guy.

So, in the end, they picked him up for cheaper than if they claimed him on waivers. Maybe the sky isn't falling after all. From the sounds of it, he'll start in Bakersfield. If he can get him game back down there, it wouldn't shock me to see the Oilers trade Picks at some point during the season - he'll have value to some team that needs goaltending relief - and bring up Ingram to battle it out with Skinner for the #1 job.

Yep - Bowman did well here. But I think you can appreciate why the Oilers history has everyone assuming the worst.

Worth noting, I like the fact that the Edm media guys were all convinced that the team didn't like or want Ingram. That suggests that the management might actually finally understand that there is an advantage to not explaining what you want to accomplish to the whole world like a cartoon bad guy.

Spec had a good quote.

"The Oilers and Stan Bowman aren't making a move for just an average goalie, and Connor Ingram is just an average goalie"

And hell, all we needed was average too the last 3 playoffs.

McTavish just signed in the duck swamp for 6 x $7M .. not 8 years.. don't understand why he wouldn't max out for the last time he'll be able to do it.. likely betting he'll be making more in 6 years.. and be injury free.. maybe, maybe not

Kaprizov stopped waiting for McDavid and set the new bar himself

8 years, $17M AAV

Insane. Drai a bargain already. For McDavid, easy to argue that even on a short deal he should be higher AAV than Kaprizov. If this deal is gonna be used in negotiations, it’s no help to the Oilers.

McD could ask for the max x 8 and he'd get it.. but unlike Kiprisov he wants to win Stanley..

Kiprisov did the right thing.. he used the limited time offer of max 8 years while he had it.. hope McD does the same for whatever amount.. trade whoever is required to fit his contract in the team cap..

Lol what an awful contract from the Wild. Injury riddled and a career high 108 points (he's 28 years old). Never scored 50 goals and playoff non factor. The Wild have lots of room for now but I imagine within a year or so they'll be pining for the Parise and Sutter contracts days.

Meanwhile the Draisaitl contract is an absolute steal of a deal already and it hasn't even started yet. Imagine 5 years from now how good that number is going to look. In fact the thing that is going to allow the Oilers to stay competitive for a long time (barring them Oilering themselves) is the amount of money that 29 left on the table. Let's see if Mcdavid has the same priorities. Another week until the seasons starts. Tick tock.

Minny seems straight up desperate here, and maybe they are right to be. No Kaprizov and interest in their team probably plummets.

Very glad Drai is cool to be on a bargain deal again. He already was for years and I’m sure he knew before his new deal kicked in he would get lapped by a bunch of guys this year, but he went for the 8 years again.

Side note on Kaprizov, his contract uses a min salary of 1M. So, if the min base salary increases beyond 1M in a 4 years, he will actually get more than 17M/season, and his cap hit will be adjusted upwards as well. Could end up being a 17.2M or so cap hit in the last half of the deal.

This applies to Drai too, and probably most huge contracts because they seem to commonly use 1M as a base for every year.
