Scenario.. McDavid leaves and is traded to another team, Oilers get a slew of excellent NHL ready players, picks, cap friendly spend, the whole thing. McDavid comes back in the offseason with a shiny deal with the cupboards full of talent. Oilers ruse the NHL.
Chances of this really happening? The same chances that I am Connor McDavid.
|
There's no chance. With McD having a full no-move, he would serious limit the field if he were to decide to let us trade him. Knowing they'll have to convince him that he can win there, no one is going to completely strip their cupboards bare for that trade, especially since they'll know that they have to be blessed by McD and his people to make a deal happen.
If McDavid leaves, even via trade, the team will be notably worse off. Return, assuming there's any at all, will be quite disappointing.
Our only hope is that our management can convince 97 that he can still be in the mix for the Cup every year for the next several years. If he signs ANY extension, that's a major win.
If he doesn't? It's armageddon.
|
Also, if McDavid is serious that winning is his priority, I doubt he wants to hamper his new team by making them trade a haul of players/prospects. I think he either signs with Edmonton or leaves for UFA with no return, like Marner.
Winning the cup might be the only thing that will make him stay.
|
Hey - the Leafs got Nicolaus Roy from Vegas. You're saying that isn't a haul?
Agreed though. McDavid can just decide to stay, and the team can't do anything about that. If he does agree to a mid-season trade, it can't be for anything that guts the team he's going to - so your best case scenario is something similar to the Gretzky to St. Louis or the Jagr to the Capitals deals. In both of those, the selling team got a handful of prospects, none of whom ever really made an impact.
Management should be bending over backwards to show McDavid's people that there is a plan, and that it involves multiple Stanley Cups in Edmonton. Otherwise next year you may have a half-empty building and an unhappy Draisaitl demanding a trade.
|
Agreed.
When he goes though, wouldn't we want to be honest and dive for the bottom again? So deal Draisatl in the summer and get picks.
|
Yeah…I’m not going through that again.
If McDavid leaves, I can’t imagine my interest ever returning to current levels. Too old to start cheering for another team, and no interest in watching bottom feeders and learning all about the upcoming draft classes.
