It really sucks so much that we wasted McDavid's prime on Chiarelli and Holland. If McDavid ends up going, that goes to the top of my list. Failing to win a cup after getting a clear cut generational talent, that's basically unheard of, but we would accomplish it if he does go.
Selfishly I hope McDavid is still an optimist and somehow believes that Stan Bowman will make management moves needed to push this team over the hump. I wouldn't blame him either if he doesn't though, because I don't even believe that :)
We went all in signing his BFF's, we brought in his old agent, we hired his old coach. The org seems to be supporting his wife in any little side business she wants to do, like oilers jackets and whatever. We've done everything we could off the ice to try to make McDavid happy to try to cancel out the terrible management thing. Fingers crossed it was enough.

The thing people forget too when talking about McDavid going in to this year is that he holds literally all the cards. The Oilers can't just trade him if it looks like he won't sign. He has a full no-move clause so if he thinks that THIS year the Oilers give him the best chance of a Stanley Cup then he can just decide to stay and walk in to UFA next summer.
Even if he allowed the team to trade him, he has full veto rights so would be able to make sure it's a landing spot that he wants, regardless of return. In fact, he would be incented to make sure that the team didn't pay too much so that he has the right pieces surrounding him when he lands.
Oiler fans just have to hope he's serious when he says that he intends to sign with the Oilers. And if this goes in to the season then we REALLY need to hope that the team gets off to a good start. Another first month where our goalies are sucking slough water and we're in serious trouble. Then we get to add another trauma item to the lists of errors above...
