Orlov just signed with SJ.. 2 x 6.5M .. hilarious.. watched Carolina in the playoffs.. that guy is done.. SJ must be trying to get to the floor perfect landing spot for him..

Oh.. and they just claimed Nick Leddy off waivers from St. Louis.. just helped St. louis clear $4M for free.. thanks Greer, you bum!

Orlov, Klingberg, and Leddy all added to their blueline. I bet between the 3 of them they get a 1st and two 2nd rounders put of trading those guys in the next 18 months.

Yeah kinda smart on Greer's part.. he needed to reach the floor and he'll be able to trade everyone of these guys for picks at the deadline .. except that both Klinger and Orlov have NMC's and Leddy has a 16 team trade list.. a little tougher on Orlov.. he's got a 2 year at 6.5

Who knows, might even see Klinger back here.. apparently he was funniest guy in the room according to Stecher.. the guys loved him.. Stecher says he was the team "glue guy" ..

The term "glue guy" is most often used to describe a nice guy who isnt good at hockey anymore. You rarely hear it used about a really good, or better, hockey player because a teammate doesnt need to use a non-quantifiable adjective to describe those who contribute on the ice.
Klingberg may be funny but he was not very good. He crumbled under a forecheck and had trouble with any quality matchup. He made a couple good passes but not enough to make up for the deficiencies in the rest of his game.

I suppose it could go either way but I wouldnt be willing to bet a 4M AAV that he improved his worth over a league min value.

LOL I agree $4M is nuts.. no contending team would do that.. too much risk at $4M cap hit.. SJ could do it because they needed to spend $ to reach the floor anyway.. plus they are taking a chance that he'll be good value at the trade deadline, and get a 2nd or even a 1st.. Klinger was smart in that he had them add a NMC when he signed.. that way he can choose who he plays for in the playoffs.. the team with the best chance to win.. and/or a team willing to sign/extend him the next season.

I posted the podcast mainly because Klinger was the last guy I'd thought would be the locker room comedian.. made me laugh! :)

Ya, I barely remember hearing him speak!
I agree it could be a good move by SJ. They are still tanking, needed to get to the floor and can take the risk.

Off to Dallas.. David Pelletier.. Oiler skating coach.. as Dallas Assistant Coach ????
Skating development is a key requirement for franchise prospects.. hope the Oil have an even better option than Pelletier.. like a full department/institute dedicated to player skating analysis and development

Looks like the Oilers have broken the brains of Dallas management after taking them down 2 years in a row. Nice to see.

I played a beer league hockey game against David Pelletier once. Georges Laraque and he joined one of our rival teams for a game in I think the summer of 2003. Laraque was nigh unstoppable. Couldn't be touched in the faceoff circle, could dangle beer leaguers with ease. Absolutely massive human, so incredibly hard to get off the puck even when guys were basically hanging off him. However, his Achilles' heel in that game is that he wanted to walk through our whole team and then feed Pelletier - and Pelletier, despite skating beautifully, had exactly zero when it comes to hands. He fluffed chances, missed empty nets, etc. We ended up winning 3-1. Laraque scored their only goal on a short-handed end-to-end rush where he roofed a backhand under the bar, but otherwise they were shut down (in big part due to an out-of-body experience from our goalie who had the game of his life as Big Georges tried to turn it up in the third). I also had two goals that night, but that's just bragging up past accomplishments.

Anyhow, the moral of the story is Pelletier isn't going to teach anyone to score. I'm a little surprised about that hire for Gulutzan. Maybe he envisions an assistant who is more just the guy who opens the door for the players?

Talking about Laraque makes me think of that basketball player who made the comment about him being closer to LeBron's skill that any ordinary player is to him (I guess he was considered a not good NBA player). Then he played a bunch of people one on one and beat them all. Georges Laraque is closer to Wayne Gretzky (in terms of peak skill) than any of us are to Georges Laraque (and most of us are a fair distance from him).

I play in a hockey league here in Idaho and up until a couple years ago there was a guy playing in a low level league in his 80s that played in the NHL in the 1960s with the Leafs and Red Wings (even won the Cup with the Leafs). I played with a guy who had played iwth him a lot and his comment was even though he was old and slow he was still the smartest guy on the ice, knew when and where to pass and when and wear to shoot and was still great at both. Guys who played in the NHL are just an another level.

It definitely makes you wonder what it would be like to play against a McDavid or Draisaitl (who lost a beer league game in Markham this week). Would be hard for them to feel any intensity at all playing complete scrubs like me and my buddies, and you can still tell they're way better.

The other NHLer who we played against around that time was Hnat Domechelli who came out and played defensive defenceman against us (he was a small offensive-minded forward in the NHL/AHL) and still had 2-2-4 as we lost 4-2 that game. He was virtually impossible to beat on the attack too.

Played with a buddy's father-in-law who had played in the WHA including, I believe, a cup of coffee with the Oilers of that era. Dude was really old by the point he played with us - maybe late 60s, early 70s, and his leg speed was gone but his passes were crisp and on the tape.

You're right - it is a different level.

Still, David Pelletier isn't who I'd have tagged as an assistant coach and I hope it goes miserably for Dallas who I feel nothing but antipathy towards.

He can mentor some of the young guys there with all of his playoff experience now.

This is a different kind of off-season transaction, but one that may be interesting to this crew. Former Oilfans contributor and frequent radio personality in Edmonton, Dennis King (AKA Matts on here) has been hired as a pro scout with the Hurricanes.

This brings joy to my heart and I wish him the best (except when CAR plays the Oil).

So how many former Oilfans people are now working for NHL teams?
