Pretty big difference. Corey Perry got drunk and aggressively hit on Chris Chelios' daughter. Definitely a far from ideal situation, but not exactly criminal.

What Hart & company did is far worse and the details are all out there. It's up to the judge to decide if there's enough evidence to convict but what they did isn't in question, nor is the fact that the girl wasn't okay with it, and that even the players were pretty uncomfortable about it and texted each other afterwards, with McLeod texting the girl repeatedly to try to make sure they didn't get in trouble.

The fact that the players felt they needed to film the girl saying she consented suggests that there was no point where they didn't think that this was potentially problematic behaviour.

Getting a conviction takes a high threshold on burden of proof, and things like consent are really complicated to judge years later - but that doesn't mean that the girl doesn't truly feel victimized or that the players knowingly did something even they felt could be seen as odious.

I put this one more along the lines of Jake Virtanen than Corey Perry. And it sickened me to see the Oilers give Virtanen a shot after that.

I don't think there's anything inherently nefarious in filming a consent video. Look, group sex like this is pretty trashy, but it's not uncommon with athletes. Having even a modicum of fame - these guys should be protecting themselves. I don't consider the consent video to even be a data point in considering whether these guys are rapists. Furthermore, it's just such a silly internet thing to believe - that all these guys got together, twirling their mustaches, and came up with an evil plan to take advantage of an innocent drunk young woman. It's a much more likely and believable story that this *engaged* woman regretted her actions the next day once she considered the consequences and her family pushed her to press charges because no way could their little girl possibly be into this trashy act.

Hockey Canada even conceded that they barely did an investigation at all before issuing the payout. These players got railroaded. If you followed this trial, it's so obvious that they aren't going to be found guilty and even bringing this case to trial is total BS. This whole trial is just spectacle for the media to eat up and continue to crap on hockey culture. Shame on everyone involved for digging this back up. The only thing this trial proved these people are guilty of is being trashy, nothing more.

Hart says she was in to it - but everyone else seems to suggest he was just horned out over the whole experience. He was the first to agree to come over, without even asking any details. He seems to have been egging everything on. He's trying to get other players to come over, he's pushing people to do more. He doesn't seem to have actually had much interaction with the girl other than getting her to perform sex acts on him.

He also seems to have no compulsion about lying. The players texted each other about how hard Dube was slapping the girl's backside - but their lawyers managed to get those texts held back from the trial. When asked about it, Hart just plays completely dumb. Says he doesn't remember that at all.

As for the girl - does it really make sense that if she was totally comfortable with the whole interaction that she would tell her mom immediately? That's not really a normal next step, now is it?

Also in the texts with McLeod from the next day, she very specifically says that she was happy when it was just him, but that she was not so okay about everything else. Hours after that, and she already was clear to him that she didn't really like all the group stuff. They not only pressured her to film consent videos - prompting her to say what they wanted her to say, but McLeod texted her multiple times to pressure her not to get them in trouble.

These players don't represent all of hockey culture but everything around the culture here was all bad.
