Beyond the surface, I will have to reserve judgement to see how the Oilers use him. On paper, the Arvidsson deal was an even better signing and should have been the exact fit the Oilers needed. A year later, both parties agreed to a split as it wasn't working out. A lot didn't work out, including injuries, but I also think the Oilers didn't really use the player correctly. Or they got a different player than they were expecting.
Mangiapane looks very much like an Arvidsson replacement. One had 14 goals, the other 15. One had 28 points, the other 27. One guy a few seasons removed from 59 point and 49 point campaigns; the other a few seasons removed from 43 and 55.
It sort of feels like a wash to me, but hopefully the Oilers find a better fit in the lineup for Mangiapane than they did for Arvidsson. And a wash is better than a loss, which is still what happened for a few positions today.
Next season addition/subtraction (so far):
In: Frederic, Mangiapane, Savoie, Tomasek
Out: Kane, Perry, Arvidsson, Skinner, Brown, Klingberg
Certainly that middle six depth scoring seems to have some questions that will need to be answered.

Mangiapane is younger than Arvidsson and has been a little more durable in his career. Arvidsson seems to get blown up 3-4 times a game and he's been hurt a lot the last couple years.
Mangiapane had an off-season surgery a couple years ago but has generally played.
The team still obviously has more to do this summer but we're a long way from training camp. Everyone seems so intent on seeing the final roster already. But there may be advantages to waiting a little and seeing what shakes out. Some players may see their market dry up and some teams may find themselves needing to make a trade to make numbers work. Lots of time here.
