Not a bad contract considering some of the crap signed today. Good 2-way winger that can score goals in many ways. You have to hope his scoring ramps back up with more opportunity. I could see him being a better compliment to McDrai than Skinner or Arvidsson were.

The #Oilers have signed forward Andrew Mangiapane to a two-year contract with an average annual value of $3.6 million.

He’s been a thorn in our side for years, always seems to be the guy that has our number. I like this.

… doesn’t fix our big holes. But it’s something.

I like this deal. Not a game breaker but a versatile player that should be able to fit into the middle six somewhere. Good term, good relative dollars given the deals signed earlier today.
Didn't watch him much after moving out east but as a flame I remember him being a pain in the butt who worked hard.
I am also pretty sure I remember him killing penalties. Not sure if he was good at it or just best option but if that is a functional part of his game I will like the deal even more.

I think the things listed above make him an acceptable fill in for some of the things we lost and potentially an improvement if he can get some chemistry with Drai or McDavid.

On a short contract I dont mind the added NMC. Some words floating around that Mang had higher offers elsewhere. If that is true and the NMC closed the deal and saved us 750K or a million, then it is a good use of the clause.

Great term. Below average AAV for what was paid out today.

Great potential and probably plays on Draisaitl’s LW. Anyone know if he kills penalties?

Now maybe a guy like Leason or Gregor for depth, and find a goalie trade. Silvos is the odd man out in Vancouver.

I took a look back and it seemed he had a pretty decent amount of minutes on the PK in Calgary his last few years. Not so much in Wash. If nothing else it means he is willing, which is half the battle to be decent on the PK.

This is a good reasonable cost deal (based on current market )

I always hated this guy with Calgary, he's a competitor and he plays hard.
I said on another post that my appreciation for him as a player happened during a World Championships one summer.. Canada had a weaker team.. and Mangiapane took over as a team leader, and was their best forward.. played on the 1st line.. drove the play.. and they won gold. He made plays, and finished chances.

Quick and tenacious on the puck.

If he can play PK I think he'll be better than Brown was (quicker) .. and he'll be more effective in a top 6 or middle 6 role.

$3.6M is a good price.. I think he left some on the table.. Toronto and Avs were in on him and probably had more cap to offer.

2 years is nice so you have some roster/cap certainty when McDavid's contract kicks in.. you don't have to scramble trying to re-sign guys.. like this year.

Update: full NTC in the first year and 5-team trade list in year two

On the surface, I like this deal, especially in the context of the cost of many other contracts today.

Beyond the surface, I will have to reserve judgement to see how the Oilers use him. On paper, the Arvidsson deal was an even better signing and should have been the exact fit the Oilers needed. A year later, both parties agreed to a split as it wasn't working out. A lot didn't work out, including injuries, but I also think the Oilers didn't really use the player correctly. Or they got a different player than they were expecting.

Mangiapane looks very much like an Arvidsson replacement. One had 14 goals, the other 15. One had 28 points, the other 27. One guy a few seasons removed from 59 point and 49 point campaigns; the other a few seasons removed from 43 and 55.

It sort of feels like a wash to me, but hopefully the Oilers find a better fit in the lineup for Mangiapane than they did for Arvidsson. And a wash is better than a loss, which is still what happened for a few positions today.

Next season addition/subtraction (so far):

In: Frederic, Mangiapane, Savoie, Tomasek
Out: Kane, Perry, Arvidsson, Skinner, Brown, Klingberg

Certainly that middle six depth scoring seems to have some questions that will need to be answered.

Mangiapane is younger than Arvidsson and has been a little more durable in his career. Arvidsson seems to get blown up 3-4 times a game and he's been hurt a lot the last couple years.

Mangiapane had an off-season surgery a couple years ago but has generally played.

The team still obviously has more to do this summer but we're a long way from training camp. Everyone seems so intent on seeing the final roster already. But there may be advantages to waiting a little and seeing what shakes out. Some players may see their market dry up and some teams may find themselves needing to make a trade to make numbers work. Lots of time here.

I mean yes and no. It's not the Oilers way to work beyond July 2. Do you honestly think expect anything substantial to happen? The Oilers don't have the cap space to take on any of those deals teams may be forced to make, so I don't see that as an option.

I could see them adding some unproven prospects (i.e. Isaac Howard) or borderline vets (Curtis Lazar), and hoping that someone steps up into the vacant roles. It often hasn't worked out well for the Oilers in past seasons.

The biggest area of need (goaltending) didn't get addressed. And in the process, they got much weaker in the middle six. They kept a core guy in Bouchard, haven't locked up McDavid yet, and on paper look worse than last year.

Things can change this summer, but given past history, I'm not really expecting them to.

Mangiapane does seem a lot greasier and able to get at pucks around the net. Arvidsson for sure was a lot like Yamamoto, small guys that just aren't very good at dodging/anticipating checks. Seems like a miracle every time Arvidsson gets out of a game without an injury. Yams career is almost toast now because of hits he's taken.

Not really sure what happened to Mangiapane this last season. It seems he got buried into a pure defensive role with Eller all season. Eller is a pretty offensively inept center on the tail end of his bottom 6 career, so that's not a great spot to be in if you are trying to get some nice stats. Just how their depth chart worked out I guess. We are obviously betting that with some offensive opportunity again he can get back to scoring.
