Bouch 4 x 10.5M seems to be finalized

TSN @TSN_Sports

BREAKING: The Oilers have signed Evan Bouchard to a 4-year, $10.5M AAV contract extension, per
@reporterchris

No discount here. Wonder what he wanted to >4 years. Think we have ~3M of cap space left. Need to start moving some bums.

Got a big contrast here between the cup champs and us. Got a more balanced team where no 2 or 3 guys can really claim they carried the group solo for extended periods, and you end up with a bunch of guys that want to keep winning and everyone is playing the same way. With a GM that can make a case to guys that they can keep winning with a little sacrifice.

Then you have our team where 2-3 guys need to blow the doors off for the team to ever have any shot, that all want to be paid appropriately for being the best or near the best. And you have crap management for years that surrounds them with plugs, many overpaid for what they bring. Some even paid like they are superstars but they are not even close to being one.

The issues is the first case is impossible for us to achieve because we never had good management, so thank goodness for draft/lottery luck. We all know why we keep failing though. Oh well!! On to next season, where we go back to hoping those few top guys can overcome trash management again. Looking pretty likely we have to play Florida in the finals once again, if we make it.

Don’t like the number. But atleast it’s only four years…?

Just means that if they want to keep him in 4 years they will have to pay him $12.5 after that.

Anyone else feel like player salaries are getting massively inflated again? I suppose it's all the sweet gambling money injected into the game since Covid.

Seems like Bouch camp was in total control of this negotiation. The huge cap increases coming and Bouch’s attractiveness for offer sheets probably had them closer to 12.5M x 8 as their ask. If he keeps playing like he has been in the playoffs he can probably get 14M as UFA in 4 years with the cap way up.

It’s probably a fair deal, but still burns since our main competition is getting discount deal after discount deal to keep their core together.

Just another rough day in Oilers History.
I still love our team but 10.5 mill for a guy who cannot defend.. is a turn over machine.. oooof. Then there’s the 9.25 dead horse.. ugh $50 mill in 4 players..
So long Stanley!!!! We were so close!!!!!
Meanwhile big discounts in Florida, building a dynasty..
our only good news is maybe signing Allen… yay…..zzz.

I would have tried to flip Bouchard for Sorokin!
If they said no.. he’s def bringing you a 1st, player and prospect at the least.
Then you sign Tyson Barrie at $1 mill as he is basically the same player just older if you want that type of player, which I don’t. I think we need a physical shut down d man.

Not a Bowman fan.

Yeah $19.75M (20%) tied up with 2 defencemen who can't defend ..

By not signing for 8 he sends a signal that winning (team) is not as important as maxing out on his value.
Maybe we got Bouch without a NMC ?? (I kid!)

Povorov just got 7 x 8.5M .. so maybe the market has gone nuts..

Gonna be interesting what T. Jeanott gets tomorrow.. yikes!

Bouch defended better than almost any of our D through these playoffs. He probably made more nice defensive plays in a dozen individual games than Nurse does in entire series.

Don't think Nurse and Bouch should even be compared. One guy is getting paid fair value now, which sucks, but it is what it is, and has been an insane playoff performer 3 years in a row now. One guys has been overpaid from the second he signed his deal and is a headache foor the coach every playoffs.

Most teams in the league would take Bouch at 10.5M no problem. 0 would take Nurse at 9.25M. Probably not even 7M except maybe Holland.

Not saying 10.5M isn't "market" value.. just saying he's weak on defense.. him and Nurse being the weakest of the 6 D-men.

Honest question. What do you two, or anyone else with this opinion, see that leads you to believe he Can't defend?

From my POV;
He isn't an elite defender but far from terrible. I believe most stats back that up.
He has a high number of giveaways but almost every offensive Dman does. As a comparison he had 12 move 5V5 giveaways than Makar, 6 more than Hanifan and for fun, 13 more than Broberg.
I dont know where to find the stat but apparently he led the league in literal puck possession. When you have the puck that much you will have higher turnovers.

The "can't defend label" seems to be based on the fact that some of his turnovers are world class screw ups. I hate those as much as the biggest Bouchard hater. There also is a media narrative that I think is driven by his face. It looks like he is high and/or barely awake which gives the appearance he isn't putting in full effort.

Some of the things are the frequency, and game situation with the goofs.. poor adjustment for risk.. and score.. net front is poor.. same as Nurse.. men and sticks don't get tied up.. we probably have different POV's which is OK.. the hope the Oilers are taking is that #2 removes those issues out of his game. Fans hoping too.

Here s a few low lights someone put together.. turn off the sound
