This has to be up there with the all time unforced errors.
Almost $4M per on a 2 or 3 year deal I would have felt was an overpay. For 8 years, I have no idea what the word is.
It's not like this guy has ever been a prolific producer at any level. He had a PPG season in the Big 10 (33 pts in 30GP), followed by just shy of 1 PPG the following year (32 pts in 36GP). He barely reached .5PPG in the AHL, and his best NHL season was 2 season ago when he put up 18 goals and 40 points in 82GP.
Of note is that those points for the most part were at even strength. So 38 ES points is actually not that bad. The only hope right now is that what we saw in the playoffs is but a shell of the player he is/can be. Because nothing about what I saw of him as an Oilers makes any kind of sense for either the cap hit or the term.

The craziest part of it all is that there's buy-out protection and a no-move clause too...

Again with the bonuses and NMC? Who the hell is our negotiator? Were we scared of someone swooping in and offering $5m per? What a crazy contract.
Much like the Duncan Keith trade, regardless how Frederic does, this reeks of unforced error in so many fronts.
If this is what they settled on, what the hell did his agent come in at for a first offer? Do they know you can counter? I’m at a loss here.
I will cheer him on and hope he blows away all expectations. But no way anyone else was giving him anything close to this. Insane.

Gotta assume that they started with max dollars. Bowman actually saved us tens of millions over the life of the deal by talking it down to this.
