I actually love increasing it to 84 games.

Also, the reason they did 84 games those 2 years in the 90s was to give each team 2 off site games in an effort to grow the game. We have seen some overseas games in recent years, but I wonder if we will see more off sight games in North America for a few years, since the NHL is talking about doing more expansion.

My opinion on that is low though. I think 32 teams is too many already. If you start bumping it up to 36 or even 40 teams eventually where is the incentive to be a fan? You know the likelihood of seeing your team ever win a championship in your lifetime is low to start with and it just keeps going down. That is actually one of the reasons I think I may follow the Oilers less once the McDavid and Draisaitl era is over. If I don't see a championship with those guys, what will it actually take?

If we went to 36, I'd divide the league into 2 and go some what like a traditional league. 2 straight divisions play each other 4 times, 2 at home, 2 on the road for a 68 league season. Top 8 in the top division go to the play-off's winner takes the Stanley Cup. In the second tier top 8 again go to play-offs winner takes the Presidents trophy. 4 semi finalists from the lower league play-off's promoted to the top division and the bottom 4 go down. I know this would never be allowed in the traditional North American sports leagues, but I think it would work.

I don't hate that idea, but imagine the uproar when Toronto would get relegated.
