McDavid's next contract.... $18mil and a legit starting goaltender.
We all know how broken and fall short the Oilers organization has been for decades.
I'm already at the point where I feel more that this guy needs an opportunity with the proper support.
And maybe that's something Oilers ownership and management are incapable of.
We knew the team has specific failure points from last year's SCF, and this year they walked in with the same failure points. If not weaker overall.
... as Bowman is in negotiation with Frederic (a 20-30 point forward) for $4 million for 8 years. Holloway was $2.29 million for 2 years, and got 63 points with the Blues.
This is on ownership and management now. Love the logo, love the players, love the coaches, love the fans, love the city... but ownership and management.... no.
But yeah hopefully he re-signs. But I'm also hoping that he somehow forces ownership and management to actually address what our needs are for the next step.

If I were McD's agent I'd float the idea of a percentage ownership for a non-20% cap contract .. something cap friendlier.. have some input with roster moves.. or at least a veto.. and at the end of his (long!) career he can get into franchise management.. maybe it's not allowed in the cba for a player to have ownership.. but Mario did for a while with the penguins

Creative solutions are now considered cap circumvention. We can't give him equity instead of cash.
I will say, I think there is a big job for the Oilers management but I'm a bit more hopeful about the willingness to stay after yesterday's press conference. It's annoying that he's even being asked about those things at points where he's dealing with a super-emotional defeat, but I guess that's going to happen when there are decisions to make.
He seemed to be pretty clear that the Oilers need to get Bouchard under contract. That's step one. They're going to need to shake some money loose from somewhere, so finding new homes for Nurse and Kane may be step number 2 and 3. Probably Arvidsson too. Amazingly both goalies still have a contract for next year. We probably need to send someone away. Pickard may be the easier guy to deal.
Lots of people seem skeptical that you can move Nurse but I think there's a good precedent with Seth Jones who looked like a total boat anchor and then moved to Florida and was on PP1 and a huge contributor. A good GM would be able to sell some other lesser one on that storyline for Nurse too so that we can move him without keeping salary, even if the return is otherwise underwhelming. Bigger issue is his NMC.
Arvidsson apparently willing to waive his (why does he have one?!) and Kane's is now only good for half the league so someone should believe that he can be your Poor Man's Tom Wilson. If Buffalo is available as a destination, I'm calling there. Also Grier and Guerin.
