London beats Moncton 3-2 in OT.. O'Reilly gets 2 goals including the OT winner.. both of slick net front deflections.
Looks like O'Reilly is London's top center, and net front for powerplays.. Craig Button did a feature on him during intermission.. singing his praises.. said he's a solid two way center who's going to play a lot of NHL games.. FWIW :)

Tiger fall to the London Knights.. small town Alberta vs. a big-league OHL franchise
Tigers lost it early in the 2nd period.. went from 1-0 after the 1st to 3-0 early in the 2nd.. lost all momentum.. not a fan of the Memorial cup tournament format .. every team got there playing multiple best of 7 series.. then the final is decided by a single game. Good on the Tigers.. played London 2 times.. finished at a draw overall.

How else would you do it though? That's already a long season for a bunch of teenagers. If they had to do a couple more 7 game series, it would never end.
It'll be interesting to see what happens now with the CHL with the players suddenly having NCAA availability. Is someone like McKenna going to want to play in the middle of nowhere when he can go to a big US University? Suddenly these players have options and I have to think the really remote teams are going to suffer the most for this. Prince Albert, Prince George, Swift Current...I don't know how those places will compete when players aren't tethered to them. They'll need to invest in facilities at bare minimum.

Junior hockey needs to be reorganized in the country. The current system as designed for 1971 doesn't work anymore. Even before the NCAA changed their rules, the clubs were locked in a boom / bust cycle and kids were being drafted places they might not want to go. If it were up to me I'd tier junior hockey like British soccer with promotion and relegation at Christmas. National, regional, provincial, local. And run an FA Cup style single elimination tournament throughout.
It's going to be hard for the CHL, but they have to understand that the NCAA might be a better option for players than major junior and a league like the BCHL is probably a better option than junior A.

Does the new options crush BCHL though? They lived on players wanting to keep college eligibility. If you can play major junior and still go NCAA route, what is the next selling point for that league?

I think BCHL is still the best route if you want to go to the NCAA. BCHL teams want kids to go to college, the CHL won't. The other big thing is guys can choose where they want to play in the BCHL.

I'd go with the same round robin.. then top 2 teams play best of 3.. first 2 games being back to back.
Alternately, if the media and leagues were more agile and flexible.. and able to organize quick enough.. they could just have the league champ of the host league be the host city.. get rid of the pre-announced host team thing.. fewer games and then fit in a best of 3 final.

Home and away two games series with all three teams. 4 games each, six total. If a team doesn't go 4-0, the top two teams face off in a final game, neutral site wherever the cup is being held between games 1 and 2.

I like that idea.. let the media fly around.. or have regional broadcast teams..
This way each home fan base.. the ones that supported the CHL team locally their entire franchise history.. get a chance to watch their own team in the memorial cup without having to spend thousands of dollars in plane fare.. hotels.. meals.. and tickets to watch them live.
It also gets rid of the "host team" concept.. which includes a team that doesn't deserve to be there.. and haven't earned their entry to the competition.
Each home game will still sell out.. which is better than what happens currently where the non-local teams have a hard time selling tickets to locals.
Do it!

You know who I want to listen to call the biggest game in Saskatoon Blades history? The Saskatoon Blades play by play guy. it's junior hockey, have some fun with it.
The host city concept is so out of touch now. The idea that the 18-44 Kelowna Rockets are guaranteed a spot in next year's Memorial Cup is dumb. I'd much rather see home fans in any town losing their minds because their team just won the cup.

Sure. That's even easier. Figure out a criteria and go with it. Pack the barn and put it on my tv.
I also really want a junior hockey FA cup tournament.

Canadian Lacrosse does this.. there are two main centers for box lacrosse in Canada .. Ontario and BC West Coast.. and every year they play for the Mann Cup (first Mann Cup was in 1910)
Every year the host team switches between East (Ontario) and BC (West) .. the host team is the WINNER of the host league ..
The Mann Cup is a SEVEN (7) game series.. its a war.. and wonderful.
Each home team sells out their barn and lacrosse fans from each league all come to watch.. even if its not their home team.. unless Victoria or Nanaimo wins then the mainland fans like me give it a miss.. too much money for a 2-way ferry ride and hotel.
Teh CHL could easily do a variation of this.. and the fans would love it.
