McDavid or Stanley Cup [ 8 vote(s) ] |
1. | I'll take SCF loss and McDavid re-signed for 8 more years | 3 / 38% | 2. | I'll take a Stanley Cup win and wave bye to McDavid | 5 / 63% |
So while we wait for the SCF to start I thought I would make a bit of a silly hypothetical dilemma based on some discussion I had with friends. I want to emphasize that I fully believe that no matter what happens over the next few weeks, McDavid will re-sign in Edmonton sometime in early July. But what if......
1) The Oilers win the Stanley Cup. The city rejoices. But once the hangover subsides, McDavid does some reflection and decides that he has accomplished what he wanted in Edmonton and tells Bowman that he does not plan to extend with the Oilers. He'll either play out the final year of his contract and then become UFA, or the Oilers can trade him to where he wants to go (Toronto? New York? wherever) so that he can try a new challenge.
2) The Oilers lose the finals. McDavid comes out more determined than ever to get this city a championship and immediately signs an 8 year extension on July 1.
So if you knew that a Stanley Cup would mean the end of McDavid in Edmonton, while a loss would ensure his presence for the long haul, would you actually prefer that the Oilers lose in the finals? I was amazed that some of my friends actually thought the second option was preferrable. I'm taking the Stanley Cup every time. If McDavid is going to want out after the first cup, it might as well come as soon as possible.
Thought I would see what people on the board think.

The Cup. That's the prize. I want a nice new white banner. McDavid can come back, get cheered then boo'd, then lustily cheered when his number is retired and the cup he won in '25 is in the house.
