Just read Spector's article about last night over on SportsNet. Man, that opening line is rich coming from the guy who would throw useful players under the bus, and then drive over them multiple times just to make sure he left some tread marks.

He's not wrong about Skinner in this case though. He's not a world beater, but when the team in front of him limits the other team's chances, he can get the job done. But when the team in front of him thinks he's Brodeur while forgetting that we don't have Stevens, Danyko, Niedermayer lining up in front of him, well, we get what we saw in his first three playoff starts.

Vegas is gonna be extra desperate on Wednesday night. Can the Oilers, and most importantly, Skinner talk themselves into believing it's Game 4 again?

If Skinner plays like this every game we would be unstoppable. If he could just get out of his own head, he can be a solid goaltender.

If the team in front of him plays like they did last night he'll be fine. In previous games we've left him out to dry with grade A chances WAY too many times.

Well with that shutout, Skinner now no longer has the worst save % these playoffs. He passed Hellebuyck!

Skinner .857
Hellebuyck .848

Next up:

Vasilevskiy .872
Hill .876
Ullmark .880

A 21 save shutout would do it (.881). A 45 save shutout would get him back to .900, but I don't want to see 45 shots fired at him.

Hard to call this game a 60 minute effort because I feel the let off in the 3rd, but was it ever refreshing to see them start on time! The first 2 periods of this game were like the last 2 of game 1. Total domination.

Hopefully the Knights are broken and we whoop them at home. And then hope the Blues and Jets pound each other for another 4 games so we can heal up a bit.

This is a very odd year for goalies in the playoffs overall. Only Freddy Andersen is having a top tier playoff performance, and he could go down with injury any second. Only 3/8 remaining teams are playing a goalie with >0.900.

Yeap, Skinner was definitely good, but the team was doing a much better job of limiting high quality shots on him as well. We need 9 more of those!

So... any chance Skinner just needed a break and a nap?

My random musings of the day:

So if the Oilers can get by Vegas (looking good), they would again not have home ice in a series against either Dallas or Winnipeg. But if they managed to get to the finals they would have home ice against either Florida or Carolina (but not Toronto or Washington).

I'm trying to think if a team has ever been at home ice disadvantage through the first three rounds, but then had home ice for the finals. Usually would require a lot of upsets. The only "upsets" (i.e. lower seed winning) in the first round were Edmonton and Florida, but we could potentially get 4 out of 4 in the second round.

Fun question!

2012 Playoffs the Devils (East 6) were on the road for E3 Florida, E5 Philadelphia, E1 NYR then lost with home ice advantage to W8 LA.

I had to look that up. I forgot LA finished 8th that year.

Neat! Thanks for checking.

I believe Adam Henrique was on that team. So being on another could be a unique feather in his cap.

Skinner shuts up some detractors, but his M.O. this year has been sketchy. It is what it is. The Oilers need someone out there that can make the occasional big save and Skinner can do that, much like Pickard did earlier in the series and the series before.

The team needs to play well in front of the goalies no matter who is in front of the net, they do that - they win, and that is exactly what happened last night, and tenacity needs to be at the top of the urgency chart, every second of that game. With less than 20s to go in the game, the team fore-checked the heck out of Vegas and kept it up. That was really encouraging to see.

The war is not over, the battle needs to slay another beast on the path to the wondrous chalice.

Battle for every inch of ice, and never let them in. Tenacity will win the day.

Go. Battle. Win.

(Saying that last bit.. I'm reminded of Kevin Nelon when he tried giving Adam Sandler's Happy Gilmour a pep talk about the ball needing to go home) Classic movie.

One more game, that's all it is. Win it, and rest up for the next battle because as the Oilers know.. it only gets harder from here.

The very definition of insanity is doing the exact same thing expecting different results.

Generally Disappointed.
