I give us a 50-50 chance. Skinner is crap the first game or two but then turns it around into a passable performance.

Skinner is always terrible for a game or two coming back in. But I hope I’m proven wrong.

He has a pattern of bad-meh-good-good-good-good-bad-bad- Pickard.

Maybe Pickard being given the crease to lose is the wake up call he needed. confused2

This is an opportunity for Skinner.
The NHL Goalie job is to perform under duress, its a psych test as much as an athletic performance.. you got the required attributes.. or you don't (i.e. Campbell) ..
I don't feel sorry for the guy.. its his job to face scrutiny.. over come it or move on..

Skills wise.. IMHO he has a lot of goalie mechanic problems.. bad positioning.. indecisive.. rebound control.. slow reaction side to side.. he doesn't move very quick.. so slow to scramble and recovery .. which is Pickard's strength. Skinner just looks cumbersome in net.

He might be salvageable as a goalie.. but he needs to get better in a lot of areas.. not sure Oilers have the requisite goal coaching in place to achieve that.. THAT should change.. not just for Skinner but for any other prospects coming up as well..

Lets hope for his best!🤞🏻 .. any case.. In McDavid. I Trust! icon_nod

100%… the team does not have the tools to enable Skinner to succeed. Dubnyk was pretty much the same mold as Skinner. He’ll probably find better success on another team that will actually identify his weaknesses and either improve those or give him better strategies to offset them.

I really wish the Oilers were a proper meritocracy and actually changed out departments that have shown substandard performance over a long period of time we more than enough data to say it’s is substandard.

I think goalie requires its own "department" .. a team of analysts and coaches.. that can identify and break down the biomechanics of their goalies weaknesses and strengths.. compare them to other team's goalies league wide.

Develop the strengths .. and correct the weaknesses. Use 3D dynamic analysis modelling .. get some guys with biomechanic engineering degrees.. get high tech, use the latest technologies, develop your own technologies.. apply that biomechanical analysis to customize and revise equipment to best suit the individual goalie.

Goalie development can't be left to just a couple of guys.

You can't expect goalie prospects to just play a few years of minor league games and suddenly just "get it" and become NHL level.

There is no salary cap on coaching and development staff. Use it. All of it.

JMHO :)

Note: I'd do this with skating as well. It seems a prospects skating in general infrequently gets better.. lots of NHL hockey skill gets limited by slow, low agility wheels.. that's something that could really be helped by proper mechanical analysis ..sport of speed skating uses all kinds of this computer analysis.. same techniques/methods could be adapted and applied to hockey.

In the days where the Oilers will be drafting low, or using picks to acquire players.. this is a way to turn lower round picks with skill into NHL level players.

Department of Skating Analytics.. Do it.

Dubs succeeded moving to a team that focused heavily on limiting high quality chances. He remained very bad at high danger save%, which probably put a permanent ceiling on how much he could succeed in playoffs, unless he ended up on an all-star quality team. But great regular season goalie behind the right system.

Skinner is another guy that is pretty bad at saving high danger chances, but above average at low/medium quality. This is something we should have recognized long ago as we all watched him look like he got stuck in mud after initial saves, and had extreme difficulty finding pucks in chaos and scrambles. We did still almost win a cup in spite of him with generational performances from a couple players and the best PK ever. Still lost though.

Coaching goalies to be better at saves requiring fast reaction and anticipation, and having the energy and willpower to never quit on plays and be athletic recovering and scrambling. That's like trying to teach a 3rd liner to be McDavid IMO, or a Darnell Nurse to be a Jacob Slavin, actually being able to anticipate plays and always be ahead of them. By the time you hit this level and are established, for the most part, you got it or you don't. The technical and fundamental stuff to be better at medium/low danger saves and puck tracking before first shots are taken, probably much easier.

Never would have guessed a couple months ago how much of a big deal this would be.

Have to think it’s pretty serious and not much chance of seeing him again this round if they are already ruling him out.

Or maybe mind games and he will be good to go?

Man this sucks.

I think fancy stats are way out of date, because this clearly is not accounting for twerks
