2 goals on 49 shots just tells you that this team is in trouble. icon_neutral

...this time, it's for real (isn't it?).

Get a 49 shot game without 3 of your top players and lose.

Team looks bad without the big guys.

They got a lot of shots, but how many of those were useless perimeter shots? The coach is definitely not against wasting shots from anywhere. It's always going to be tough when you lose your best players, but they've been pretty awful without them for all but one or so games. They aren't scoring, they're losing to non-playoff teams. It's not good.

What happened to Nuge and Hyman? They both seem shades of their former selves at the moment. Although playing with Kapanen & Jones isn't a recipe for success.

This team isn't doing anything in the playoffs this year, gang. They are sputtering and running on super old oil right now.

They'll be lucky to get one win against the Kings, the way they're playing.

I think we underestimate how good McDavid and Draisatl actually are. What an unfortunate offseason. Kudos to those two to still have us in contention.

Jones ... That jersey will not be a hot seller at the locker room sale this summer. He will always be remembered for not being memorable. At least Kapanen does some things well.

A few things becoming more clear from these last few games without Leon and McAwesome..

1. No wonder McDavid and Leon have had trouble finding wingers that are able to convert .. none of the wingers they've received have been that good (Hyman?) .. no snipers.. no speed.. no tenacity.. no toughness.. no guys that can get the puck.. keep the puck.. and minimize turnovers .. they just haven't been very good.. that's on pro-scouting, and the GM.. too many of the guys on the current roster fall in this category.. Perry is playing 4th line and he's the 5th highest scorer.. he's 39!

2. There's very little toughness and/or physicality on this team.. few Pitbulls.. mostly Labradoodle.. McDavid and Leon .. the two highest skilled players.. are two of the toughest players on the team.. basically look out for themselves physically.. because they have to.. and the guy that takes on the most opposition in confrontations is 39 years old and a former Hart and Richard trophy winner.. just because no one else steps up.. there is a big vacuum that someone needs to fill.. so he does it by default.. a very bad characteristic of this team.

Gudas should have had to dance a two-step with someone tonight.

3. That powerplay with Leon and McDavid is actually underperforming.. even when its ranked the best in the NHL.. if they had some true auxiliary goal scorers on it.. better shot.. better hands.. and net presence.. it would be even more lethal.

4. Oilers don't really have any puck carriers besides Leon and McDavid.. occasionally RNH.. and 13.. are OK.. buts its a weakness.. the PP entries the last few games without McDrai were a total disaster. Bouchard can't carry the puck.. McLeod was good.. but he's gone.

5. Bouchard got turnstiled again tonight.. defensive liability.. becoming more apparent he's no $10+M d-man.. interesting to see what Bowman does with him.. keep hoping he gets better defensively ?

6. Its become clear that there are very few current players that can't be replaced..

7. Oiler pro-scouting is Blue Jay level

Another lack luster game. Limping into the playoffs at this rate. It's pathetic

Losing 3/4 to the Ducks this year is an unfortunate thing to have to remember if we end up 5 or less points behind the Kings for home ice. Home ice a bigger deal against the Kings too IMO. The slush rink is not fun for our players, and helps the team that focuses heavily on defense.

Another year with 97/29, another year where a deep run will need to overcome opponents home ice advantage.

Never winning a division with these 2 after so many years is tragic.

Unpopular take, but I thought last night was a fun game too watch. Sure there were lots of perimeter shots, but that lineup was decade of darkness lottery team bad. Even just having one of Leon or Connor back changes this team. Special teams is better and we are not running Henrique as a 2C.

Although the longer this goes on, the less confident I feel that we will be healthy for game 1 of the playoffs.

They should part ways with most of these players as they are hopeless without the big two. I was really hopeful they could trade Bouche for a goalie before the deadline but other teams watched his tape obviously.

In a nutshell

Bouchard contract decision will be tough.. he's not worth big money for what he brings right now.. that contract would soon be untradeable.. what is he.. the guy from last year's playoffs.. or the guy we saw all this year .. more likely the truth is what he is today than in the past..

Oilers painted themselves into a corner.. they've kept making bets their #1 draft pick was going to get better .. based decisions on the cap .. and roster to suit that vision (bet).. putting even more chips on the table.. now it isn't coming true.. and they have run out of chips to play.

Oilers (Bowman) probably let Broberg and Holloway walk on the RFA offer because they thought they'd need cash this year for for Bouchard.. bad forecast.. bad decision.. one of Oiler's worst.. of many.

Bouchard is giving the Oilers a big discount this season with his on ice play. He’s throwing away a ton of cash this season leading up to next contract.

And yeah Broberg and Holloway still sting like hell and still will for a decade or more

One of the most worrying things (of a few) about Bouchard is his skating.. he has weak pivots, and he has no extra gear.. they've been weaknesses in his game since a rookie and he hasn't seemed to improve.. you'd think he would've put in the extra training to improve on it.. those are mechanics that can be improved.. lack of interest.. denial?

Oh, he has that extra gear, but seldom seems to use it - there was a recent game that he screamed back and broke up a scoring play when he was caught up ice. That surprised the heck out of me and I had to check if it was him as I had thought.

Just back to the Gudas hit to Perry.. ZERO supplemental review or discipline on Gudas.. now compare what he did.. to what McDavid WAS suspended for (after the fact) earlier this year..
https://x.com/AzorcanGlobal/status/1909709391420703150

McDavid's was much more incidental.. plus the player had the puck.. Perry got absolutely KO'd.. PLUS he didn't have the puck.. he was just skating by..

So its not just the on ice officials that have an anti-Oil bias .. its the league as well.. but we've all known that.. every ruling by the NHL is a "novel" interpretation of a rule that impacts Oilers worse than others.. from giving up draft picks.. to suspensions.. and on-ice officiating
