Listened to Seravelli on ON on Monday, he's onboard with the NHL's crap refereeing.. says its a huge problem for the league.
Then you have Friedman on ON Tuesday.. he was asked by Stauffer.. cue Friedman tap dance.. as wishy washy as a wet dish rag on the subject.. scared to express a firm opinion.. doesn't want to risk his SN gig.
Anecdotally..
I watched an NCAA game on the weekend.. Notre Dame vs. Ohio.. (because Oilers had a D-man prospect .. Fisher.. on ND) .. watched the whole game and there was one thing that stood out.. the refereeing was what you expect from a referee.. no game managing .. no score managing.. if there was an infraction it was called.. and I never saw one that was missed or let go to affect score or game "parity"
1. No observable calls missed
2. Every call required similar infraction level (for each team) before it was called ..regardless of the score.. or time of the game.. no "variable" infraction threshold.. .. unlike the NHL's yo-yo standard.
3. Penalty threshold was constant
4. Didn't notice refs
5. Refereeing had no impact on game outcome.
So.. it would appear that consistent.. competent hockey refereeing IS possible.. and could happen in the NHL if it was actually something that was considered a flaw.. instead of a feature.. by the NHL.

Is anything less to be expected when a professional sports league jumps into bed with gamblers?

You'd think the NHL would want to be be even more above board with officiating after what happened in the NBA.. anyone watching the average NHL game would not be able to predict what is or is not an infraction.. only thing you can predict is that a penalty will be called, or not called, to manage the game and/or result. The self described "best officials in pro sports" are unable to make consistent calls... maybe it actually is the gambling.. the casinos want the games to be close right up until the end so that more bets are placed.. right up to the final few seconds.. maximizing the bet volume potential of each game.. and casino profit per dollar spent on NHL advertising and partner agreements..

Anytime an environment is created where someone can profit off a sport through gambling, some one or some group ( organized crime, sports books) are going to do everything to take the random chance out of it. This is nothing new. Baseball was almost destroyed by it back in the dead ball era (1900-1920). Seems like you are interested in sports scandals so here are some links for further reading:

As long as enough money is on the line, someone will try to cheat to get an edge. It might be harder to fix now because player salaries are astronomical compared to early athletes so there is less motivation for them to get involved with gamblers.....but the league is involved with sports books and gamblers through advertising revenue. This should not be the case and will eventually lead to people questioning the integrity of the game. That is the biggest danger to any professional sport. Baseball was just lucky enough to have Babe Ruth come around at the right time to get the bad taste out of everyone's mouth.

With only one head to head left against Vegas, and both teams with similar strength of schedule left, looking like a 4th straight 1st round matchup with the Kings.

At this point, that might be the better scenario than a head-to-head with Vegas in the first round. Maybe the Wild can upset them in Round 1 and give us a bit of an easier path.
We're only 5 points back of Vegas still, so that Feb/March swoon looms large. Could definitely have won the division.
That said, maybe a little adversity is a good thing. Lights a little fire under the team and makes them realize they're still vulnerable so need to bring the A-game...
