Yeah...don't care if he ends up with more goals, I still don't see him as the "greatest" goal scorer.
People say there was way more scoring in the 80s, but Gretzky was simply on a different level. His 92 goal season was 28 more than second place. His 87 goal season was 31 better than second. In the 4 years from 81-82 to 84-85, 99 put up an eye popping 323 goals in 314 GP. Nobody was close (Bossy 2nd with 233). An AVERAGE of 80.75 goals per season. 1.03 per game!
OV's best season of 65 goals was only 13 better than the next guy. His best 4 year stretch was early in his career when he put up 217 goals in 315 games. 54.25 per season, .69GPG.
Funny enough, the last 4 years as a late 30.s man, he's having almost a career high GPG. He's at .56GPG over the last 4 years (ages 35-39). He was at .54 in his late 20's (25-29).
The guy will have almost as many goals in his 30s as in his 20s - 475 goals, 0.63GPG in his 20s. 411 goals and counting, 0.58GPG in his 30s). To me, he's just a better Mike Gartner with a never before seen late 30s surge. I'm sure there's nothing to see there.
