It's crazy that Hall is basically a toss in on this deal. You would think that the Hawks would get a 3rd just for the salary retention, but they had to give up Hall, who you would think could get a 2nd at the trade deadline at least.

The 3rd Round Pick original belonged to the Hawks, so this sets them up to make an offer sheet this summer (providing they have their first two, which I didn't look up).

They do have both their other picks. Interesting what they decide to do this summer.

1 Cup

Carolina is a well run team. They will make a cup run any year now.

They have already won the deadline. There will be nobody better than Rantanen. Hope we get something nicer than Sam Carrick…

I can’t believe the Avs traded Rantanen. A top 5 in the world player who actually produces in the playoffs. Marty Necas is good but not on the same level. canes got way better overnight.

That being said, they also saddled themselves to the biggest loser in the league. You don’t succeed with Taylor Hall. Nobody ever has. The guy just keeps proving me right. Just a massive loser.

Sounds like Rantanen wants to get paid. Like 13M+. He got his cup and this is his last shot to secure the next 4 generations of Rantanen’s. If he wasn’t at all interested in a team friendly deal, I can see why the avs did this. Helps us in our conference at least.

Basically, the same situation as Drai was in. You just gotta pay the guy. He’s worth it. So few guys the truly move the needle, you gotta keep them when you have them.

True, but I think Drai is quite a bit better than Rantanen, but Rantanen basically wants Drai money.

Probably has been some errors by the avs with guys they signed long term too. Ross Colton, Miles Wood, Middlestadt all sweet long term deals for what they bring. Nichushkin, don't know what's going on with that guy anymore. He's 1 substance abuse mistake away from a 1 year ban I think, and he stays fully on the cap if he does. Blackwood just put 5.5M on their cap next year and they may still need to go goalie shopping if he is only having a lucky run right now (remember when he didn't allow 3 in any avs game until he faced us? 3 GA in all his games since haha).

I do get the cap hell they have push themselves in now. Can definitely argue they should have stuck more with their top guys and been a little more picky about tossing money at other mid-range fowards.

Top 5 in the world?? You are going to see how wrong you are about Rantenen now that he won't be playing next to Mackinnon. Any team that pays him like a superstar is going to regret it for a long time but hopefully someone does.

Comparing him to Draisaitl is hillarious. Not in the same universe.

I don't think it's as crazy as you think. He's not at the same level, but it's not a massive drop off. Over the last 5 years, he's fourth in scoring behind McD, Draisaitl & Mackinnon. He's 5th in goals (Matthews, Draisaitl, McDavid, Pastrnak), 11th in assists, 8th in points per game (McD, Kuch, MacK, Drai, Matthews, Marner, Panarin ahead). He's 3rd in TOI/game for forwards (MacKinnon & McDavid ahead). 9th in shots. 6th in +/- (3rd among forwards).

I think there's definitely an argument that he's been a top-five player in the world. At worst, he's been top-10.

Colorado shoulda won way more cups if they had 3 top 5 players in the world all this time :)

Nate does have 44 more 5v5 points (177 vs 133) than Rantanen in the last 3 years, in 8 less games.

I'll be curious to see how Rantanen does with the Canes. Without a doubt they got the better player for their playoff run. But, again, Hall. Run may already be over before it started.

Top 5 forward perhaps. Not a top 5 player. Realistically I think he’s the 3rd most important player on Colorado behind MacKinnon and Makar.

I have McDavid, Draisaitl, MacKinnon, Kucherov, J. Hughes, Makar, Hellebuyck, Shesterkin, Matthews ahead of him.

Side note, Friedman said the Avs were only willing to go 11.75M for Rantanen.

Sakic might be a little overconfident in his ability to replace elite talent.

Weird Necas stats. He is having a crazy year of points, but he was actually dead last on the Canes in analytics measures. 45% high danger changes with 58% offensive zone starts. He's been the opposite of the kind of player the Canes typically go after this year, and what the Avs have targeted under Sakic, in terms of fancy stats. Sakic bought the absolute peak of Necas.

How embarrassing if that happens.

Sam O'Rielly worth more than a 1st round pick in 2025 that we gave up to draft him last summer? Seems like he's having an almost identical Draft+1 OHL season to his draft year, so probably not.

Florida, Vegas and Dallas are the 3 front runners for Rantanen, per Chris Johnston

Gotta be kidding me lol. Vegas or Florida getting him gonna be very annoying to watch while we can’t figure out if Kane will stay on LTIR until the playoffs.

If it can't be us, it would be tremendous to see a bubble team like the Rangers get him and then still fall flat because they haven't had the courage to fire the coach that the team's completely tuned out all year.

Yeah the ONE time we can legitimately pull a "Vegas" magic LTIR act.. Kane having TWO (2) surgeries.. and the injured guy wants to "get in a few games before playoffs" .. putz

Rantanen to the Stars.

West gets stronger. Fantastic.

Now 8 x 12M extension signed with the Stars.

At least the Canes got some nice picks out of it all, but maybe they would rather just have Necas back for a playoff run.

Necas is about to pass Rantanen in league scoring.

Mmm I wonder why icon_rolleyes

Smart management from Carolina. Not to trade for him in the first place but to realize the sunk cost and trade him rather than sewer their cap for a mackinnon-less rantanen.

Ideally the contract with Dallas would have been a bit higher but this is still good news for oilers fans. Dallas is not a major threat.

Now Colorado... They are a massive concern. Have to give sakic credit. Realized who the drivers were and dumped Rantenans ass at peak value before the rest of the league realized.

It's got nothing to do with Rantanen. It's all about the other loser they traded for. Guy is a hockey cooler. Just drags the team down wherever he goes. Just a massive loser.

Rantanen with his league leading (tied Ovechkin) 8th(!) empty net goal last night!

Dang, I haven't looked at the rocket race in a while. Drai is 11 up on the 2nd place guy (46 vs 35) while not being able to hit an empty net to save his life. So impressive, but also kinda unimpressive at the same time :)

Ovechkin has 9 more empty netters than Gretzky. Seems likely he would break the record next year when adding that qualifier.

Gretzky still has a 58 goal lead on Ovechkin when counting playoffs.
