I thought he was injured but I’m very happy they’ve picked up a player that will actually throw a hit!

Trade was mainly for Frederick.. but also get former 1st rounder Max Jones.. 6'-4".. with skill.. now 27..
Also, not mentioned is oil get rights to Petr Hauser.. Czech RW.. 5th rounder .. no idea who he is.. 6'-4" .. 21 yo..
Wanner to me was a long shot prospect at D.. his wheels were suspect.. saw him at the prospects tournament.. was left very doubtful..
Lachance I think wasn't going to sign with oil.. would've been a Marino situation..
So essentially a 2nd and 4th for a 75% retained Frederick..
McDAVID! Oh YEAH Baby!! (Thank you Lord!)

So we have no 1st or 2nd round picks for 2025 now.
Box check on adding some toughness at forward, ignoring that he is currently injured with a recurring issue. Recalling Frederick beat up old man Perry earlier this year.

Seems a high price for a guy with 15 points on the year. We do already have a lot of forwards who don't provide much offence.
I wonder if we'll convince him he should sit out until the end of the year...

lol. Paying a 2nd rounder for retention on a pending UFA to LTIR him until season end would be … very Oilers!

This seems like a wildly underwhelming move. Frederic is a big body bottom six forward that is struggling to put the puck in the net this year. How does this make the team better exactly?

Don’t know anything about him. I like seeing 18 and 17 goals the past 2 years.
Still…this is a year you take the biggest swing you can.

I like the trade just for the muscle. I have been so frustrated watching these hit-free games this year. Will be nice to get some bodies thrown.
Now wouldn’t it be sweet to flip Arvidsson for a 1st? I feel like that would be what we’d have to pay at this time of year to get a player like him.

Isn’t that exactly what teams do when making a Cup run?

Having to give away our best 2025 pick trade chip to save cap space on a grinder is a bit worrying. Hope it's not a sign that we really are stuck doing dollar for dollar moves and Kane is going to force his way back into the lineup before season end.

Is it the asset you don’t like, or is trading away picks and prospects that bother you?
I’m not sure how I’d feel if we kept all of our picks and middling prospects and I like Frederic’s toughness. I think he will be a fan favourite for this run, even if the cost was pretty high.

If Arvidsson was playing well I’d agree, and if he didn’t have a full NMC I’d also think there would be a team looking to grab him.

Friendly reminder that Colorado traded a 2nd round pick and a goalie playing worse than Skinner for Blackwood earlier this year.

I'm not sure that reminder is actually friendly.

NetBOG has been clear about this forever. He thinks draft picks are crucial and shouldn't be moved.
Of course if you look at the teams that have won a bunch of salary cap era Cups: Boston, LA, Pittsburgh, Chicago, Tampa. You see that they've all taken exactly the other tack. When you have a contender, you take big swings and do whatever you can to give you the depth to win.

Here's Tampa's GM - one of the very best in the league - explaining the value of draft picks:

This is precisely correct. A draft pick gives you a potential future player. If you can get an equivalent or better player and get them NOW instead of waiting years for them to arrive, then you've done well for yourself.
Yes - the guy drafted in June 2026 is going to be under team control for several years, while there's a chance the guy you're trading for could leave. However, A) a guy picked in the last handful of picks in the first round is a question mark to even play in the NHL at all, and B) the team needs to win now. What's the consolation in getting a guy who might be a third liner for us in 2030 if we never win a Cup with McDavid & Draisaitl? The team needs to load up. Address the weaknesses. Get back to the Finals and this time win it.
That's really all there is to it.
