2 Cups

Early reports saying Hyman, Bouchard and Skinner will NOT be selected for the 4 Nations Cup. McDavid will be all alone.

Poor Bouchard. 114 point 2023-2024 not good enough. Come on down Travis Sanheim!

Hockey is still very much run by narratives without close analysis.

On the bright side, I'd prefer if our guys get some rest. They had a long year last year, they don't need to waste energy on the NHL's Olympic replacement sideshow. Canada won the 2016 World Cup with reserved celebration and nobody remembers it or talks about it.

Is anyone actually excited for this, or does it just feel like some second-rate tournament the NHL is trying to show down our throats? Like who at the end of their career will be talking about their 4 Nations tournament medals?

Just do Olympic participation every four years and we will be happy.

This has kind of been my feeling. Since it is just NHL players and limited to 4 countries, its not like it is best on best for any teams except for the US and Canada. Mostly this just feels like the NHL is trying to get the players to try harder than the All-star game, but as an International Tournament it is the biggest joke they could come up with, and I am just hoping that no one gets injured. The less Oilers that play the better.

I'd have this than the all star game. I think mid-year is better than the old August Canada Cup schedule. I'm not excited, but I'll be paying attention.

I prefer the tournament before the season, but if I am expecting my team to go deep every year, then maybe not so much. I do this will give us better hockey than the all star game though.

Just saw the Ekholm and Ardvisson made the Sweden team.

Couldn't care less about this tournament. It's not a best on best based on hockey, it's an invitational.

I'm thrilled that at least only 97 is going and it would be amazing if he said I'm not playing on the team if petrangelo is on it and stayed home.

Obviously would never happen but that's the ideal scenario for me.

Doughty coming right off injury is Pietrangelo’s replacement. Only 6 games played.

There are a lot of picks I don’t like on this team. Parayko, Sanheim, old injured Doughty, Bennett….not their best lineup.

I am with you. I like some int'l hockey but this made up cup to try and manufacture interest just hasn't grabbed me. I will watch the first Canada game. Seeing McDavid, Crosby and a couple others on the same team might not happen again.
After that first game there is a pretty good chance I watch only highlights and maybe the final.

Just saw Ekholm’s interview at the tournament. Guy has lost his voice from illness. Guess add him to hopes no injuries and that he somehow can come back to us fresh.

If Canada is in the final. Definitely will record at least hehe.

What I'm learning here is teams should play color uniform against color uniform more often AND Sweden v Canada should always be yellow and red. Good looking game tonight.

Marner's been a total dud on McDavid's wing. Barely involved in the play, not making himself an option for passes...

Better sequence as this game closes out, but he's been an anchor in a bad way for McDavid. Needs to drive the net and look for passes and rebounds. Same with Reinhart, but he's been more involved.

Surprised at how quiet MacKinnon's line has been in the last couple of periods. They've been set on cruise control for a while now.

And there he is with the winner. Way to dig deep, Mitch.

And how about Sid in this game? What an animal... injured and guts it out, gets three assists and looks like he did in his prime. Hopefully Connor takes some notes on what it takes to be championship-level clutch.

Only caught highlights but Binnington, yikes. Couple awful goals allowed. Brodin and Kempe. I think on both he actually moves out of the way of saving them because he is clueless on the shot.

Looks like Theodore will be more LTIR space for Vegas. They did Karlsson already. Maybe don’t even need Stone out this year!

Agree, Marner is useless with McD.. at least Reinhart can get in the play.. but both are way too slow.. McD is playing by himself out there.. no one is open for a shot once McD draws EVERYONE to him.

Some small, slow players on TC.. Koneckny, Jarvis, Hagel.. bummer about Theodore, he's one of their best.

I'd drop Aiden Hill in there.

Well I’ll eat some words. I’m into this…how could you not like last night?

Olympic participation is much better, but it’s been a long time coming seeing Crosby McDavid and MacKinnon putting in that first goal.

Man, this might backfire on NHL Corp. .. after seeing the level of skill and most importantly SPEED of play.. it just highlights how watered down the NHL regular season is with all the expansion they've promoted in recent years.. it might just make people realize how much lower the rest of the NHL play is.. it might actually reduce enthusiasm for the NHL regular season.. opposite of what NHL Face-Off was intended.

It's always annoyed me how the NHL values equality of teams over what teams deserve. Got a crappy team against a skilled one? Let's instruct the refs to ignore all the blatant penalties that the lesser teams committed against the more skilled team, because "it wouldn't be fair and we want an exciting playoff race"

F off with that BS. You have superstars in this league. Fans want to see them show their skills. But you're gonna handicap them by letting scrubs hold and trip and prevent them from showing their skills? Way to kill your league.

I'm by no means saying call it like the NBA where star players can travel to their heart's content, but just call the rules of the game. It's not rocket science.

We have seen our share of best on best before. That 2014 Canada Olympic team probably played the most flawless fast, smart and skilled hockey ever seen.

It's kinda sad you have the guy arguably having the best season in the league in Drai just completely excluded from this because of the team format lol.

Hope people are enjoying it, and that they can fix the format and maybe have a setup where lots of good players that don't happen to be from 4 select countries can participate too. But I'm still looking forward to seeing how our season goes in our watered down league full of LTIR scammer teams (that we better be one of this year!)

That would be an interesting situation. If you are a duel citizen but you normally play for one country, can you play in a tournament for the other country if you primary country was not invited to play? I want to say that you have to go at least a year before you can switch like that, but I could be wrong.

In the Olympics, and most sports bodies like the IIHF, you can switch countries. but have to miss a year or two (?) in between .. so they can't just swing back and forth.. African track athletes do it all the time, that's how they wind up representing some Arab oil state.. money $$$$$ .. and lots of it.. happens in rugby to.. Canada even picked up a Dutch speed skater because he was stymied by other skaters ahead of him in his own country.

Not just money, lots is opportunity too, as well in many cases as actually moving.

Canadian sprinters often aren't born in Canada, and we export curlers to other nations too.

The 3-2-1-0 point system in this tournament could make things interesting.

If tomorrow Sweden beats Finland and the USA beats Canada (both very possible) in regulation that would leave the standings as USA 6 points, Sweden 4 points, and Canada 2 points. That would clinch a finals birth for the US and almost allow them to pick their opponent. Canada would then need to beat Finland and hope the US beats Sweden to get to the final.

Any chance the Americans would take a page from Bengt Gustafsson circa 2006? For those who don't know, Gustafsson was the coach of Olympic team Sweden who won the gold and after the tournament he basically admitted he purposely lost a round robin game to Slovakia so that Sweden would get an easier first round opponent (Switzerland instead of Canada). Any chance (if this situation arises) that USA would soft play Sweden to eliminate Canada? I wouldn't put it past them.

We'll see if letting Sweden get to overtime on Wednesday proves costly. Of course just whoop the Americans tomorrow night and none of this will matter.

Crisis averted!

USA 1GP 1-0-0-0 3 pts
Canada 1GP 0-1-0-0 2 pts
Finland 2GP 0-1-0-1 2 pts
Sweden 2G_ 0-0-2-0 2pts

If Canada beats the US, there's no scenario where we can't make the Finals. If we lost in regulation, we would have to beat the Finns. Could still miss if we won in OT, but the Swedes beat the Americans out right.

Thomas Harley's joined the team as an extra emergency defenceman. I suspect that many of the other options are now enjoying their vacations, and in no hurry to return for 3 extra games.

Interesting pick. This D group will be in survival mode tonight.

Team Canada or not Bennet is garbage. Would have loved to see him lose a few teeth.

Well this is fun so far lol

Little vintage McDavid. Including a blatant trip on him ignored by refs and a beauty goal burning a D on a solo rush.

Binnington was suspect in the Sweden game too.. can't let in weak goals.. they have Aiden Hill sitting there.. I think he's a lot more solid than Binnington.. Binnington was almost out of the league a couple years ago.

Get the full Oilers experience still. Gotta move a mountain to score but any poo can go in on us at any moment.

Far be it from me to tell Connor Mcdavid how to play hockey but maybe if they give you a clean breakaway don't try to force a pass confused2
