Whatever. Loss is a loss

But I'm so tired of players doing whatever they want to McDavid and nothing called.

To many dropped passes to no one at the blue line hampered us in attack. Sloppy shift led to the 2nd goal, but this team is fighting every game to come back. They believe in there ability to do so, which is a very good sign.

Can't say getting up early to watch this was fun, but we rest up now and have 6 home games to come, so plenty of time to rest up between games.

Just incredibly bad refereeing. The guy is sitting on McDavid for 15 seconds and the ref refuses to call anything.

Also - while I expect the league will give equal penalties to both McDavid and Myers, they shouldn't. While McDavid's shot to Garland was not a good decision, it was mostly in the side of the helmet (not to mention with extreme provocation). Myers just popped Bouchard straight in the face.

Conor Garland was holding and pinning McDavid down. Apple does not fall far from the tree. Garland’s father killed a Boston College student back in 1984.

I don't know what exactly I was expecting when I followed that link, but I'm certainly intrigued.

It might, just MIGHT, be a stretch to suggest that Connor Garland is a dirty player because his dad allegedly killed someone. I mean, there are lots of murderers out there whose kids don't grow up to be angry hockey elves.

Agree it may be a stretch, but it appears Garland’s father has a violent streak.

I do wish just once we'd have the coach go off after one of these things. Maybe it needs to wait until the playoffs for maximum impact, but it's just brutal that the league lets it's best player be completely abused so much without calling the rules as they're written.

I think it's letting the league off the hook to lay that at McAuley's feet. He's crap, for sure, but it's night after night after night that people mug not just our guys but all the league's best players, and for some reason the league is just okay with that being "part of the game" despite rules that clearly say it isn't.

Good on Garland for taking out a big part of our attack for 15 seconds, and for getting under his skin which almost certainly helps out the Canucks in the next meeting, just two games away. Can't blame him for doing that. But in any other sport, if you're doing that kind of nonsense, the other team gets an advantage. The ref blows that down when Garland is first holding McDavid's arm, or when he tackles him AGAIN, and there are two less infractions for DOP(e)S to review.

Just brutal.

I don't seem to see reffing this bad in the CHL.. its usually pretty consistent throughout the entire game.. both by the infraction level to cause a penalty.. and similar for each team.. those refs are trying to do the best job they can because they know they are accountable to someone.. the NHL refs aren't accountable to anyone.. they are effectively untouchable.. a perfect home for narcissism.. like Gary Bettman's smirk whenever he gets interviewed.

Players and coaches are scared to criticize the refs because the refs.. and the league.. are vindictive.. you'll get punished.. during the game and/or by fines.

Teams know they'll get it even worse if they say anything publicly.. no upside.

The broadcasters are scared to criticize them because the future of their TV rights contracts are in jeopardy.. and the on-air staff keep quiet because they know they can be fired at the snap of a finger.. the NHL has to be the worst officiated major north American pro sport. (although baseball umpires are pretty bad with strike calls).

Which raises the question about the effect of NHL refereeing on sports betting outcomes.. it should be a bet on the players playing a game.. not how refs will call or not call a game.

As a comparison of sports leagues (NFL) .. today I heard Troy Aikman flatout say that a couple penalty calls were NOT penalties.. no wishy washy fence sitting.. Aikman won't be fired for saying it.. because everyone in America saw the same thing on TV.. and the ref who made it will probably be made accountable afterwards.

The NHL does the opposite.. they pretend the viewer never saw the missed call, or call imagined.. and just ignore it .. or find an excuse to explain it.. like the public are listening on the radio and can't see it with their own eyes on TV.. ..

As a result NHL refereeing never gets better.. and never will in its current form.

The thing about this is that even if the refs did call a penalty on Garland, I'm not sure anything would have changed. As I recall, the Oilers had the puck the entire time, so no whistle would have gone anyway and I think we get the same results.

I'm actually surprised this kind of thing (Garland mugging McDavid in the last few seconds of the game) doesn't happen more often. There's really no reason NOT to do it--if you get a penalty there's only a couple seconds left in the game anyway and you prevent the league's best player from potentially tying the game.

It reminds me of a story I read about Roger Nielson when he was coaching Peterborough in the OHA in the 70s. His team was up by a goal and had a two man-disadvantage in the final minute of the game. So as soon as the face off happened, Neilson just immediately sent two more players on the ice causing the ref to immediately put his hand up for a too many men penalty. As soon as Peterborough touched the puck the penalty was called, but since they couldn't go down more than two men, it didn't matter. Neilson just kept doing this three or four more times until time ran out and his team won the game (who cares that half his team was in the penalty box when the final buzzer rang). This flagrant thumbing his nose at the spirit of the game, caused a rule change in the OHA that a too many men penalty in the final two minutes when you are already down two men would result in a penalty shot.

I've always thought there should be something like that for any penalty taken in the last two minutes of a game when the player will never have to serve the entire sentence. Once thing I think would work is the other team has the option to decline the penalty and instead add an extra two minutes to the game clock. I don't see this ever happening but it would make teams think twice about blatant fouls in the final seconds of a game.

I agree with your assessment. Even if the hand went up, there wasn’t enough time to surrender possession, win a face-off, and get a shot. The Canucks don’t even have to touch the puck if the Oilers surrendered possession voluntarily. The ref can blow the whistle if they want but it would kill some crucial seconds.

The NHL should look at this situation for a future rule change. Penalty shot for any penalty taken in the last minute, or decline and take a PP?

Refs will usually call out at guys out that they are at risk of a penalty and make it clear they are getting one. Garland was met with complete silence and allowed to just keep tackling McDavid with the refs turning a blind eye.

You can see Garland looking around at the refs multiple times as he continues to grab on, and could very well have emboldened him knowing he was going to be allowed to get away with it.

They could also add time to the clock from the time of the infraction to the time the opposing team eventually touches the puck.. this would only apply during the last 1 or 2 minutes of game ..

The NFL has clock run-offs near the end of the game already.. so the concept of adding or subtracting time on the game clock is not something unprecedented in pro sport..

Here's an example of Wes MCCauley's refereeing.. I missed this one.. and probably so did Sportsnet Vancouver. Its a text book trip.
.. then remember what the Oilers did to receive their minors.. like the one on Ekholm down by 1 goal and 4 minutes to go..

I don’t mind McDavid’s response at all. You’re gonna hold him for 15 seconds in dying seconds of a 1 goal game, you deserve to get a crosscheck to the chiclets.

The chicken wing against Minnesota was worse and unnecessary.

He’s never been top of the league in penalties drawn. Crazy stat for the best player in the world.

Kinda perfect timing for Parros to be able go suspend McDavid when we are at risk of passing his home team in the standings.

Ryan on waivers suggests the Oilers are fine with Philp as the replacement for RH 4th line C. That's likely the right call even if there's some growing pains. Ryan's definitely lost a step and is on his very last legs as an NHLer.

I'll be fine if Brown isn't ever in the Oilers lineup again. I was hoping for him to at least grab a Canucks player off that last draw last night, but even there he disappointed.

He would have gotten a suspension for instigator in last 5 minutes.. but he's one of the few guys they could miss out of the line up. Oh well.

Bottom line is refs need to set an infraction standard and then apply it equally through the game.. the game management .. and more like score management.. strategy .. trying to manufacture results at worst.. and create "entertainment" drama at best.. diminishes the effect of the player's performance out of the games outcome.. part WWE and part sport.

Meyers cross check on Bouchard.. using his full 6'-8" extension.

Your Guess What the DOPS Squad Decides[ 18 vote(s) ]
1.McDavid gets 1, Meyers gets 1 .. call 'er square! 5 / 28%
2.McDavid gets 2, Meyers gets 1.. who does McDavid think he is? 2 / 11%
3.McDavid gets 1, Meyers gets 2 2 / 11%
4. McDavid gets 2, Meyers gets 2 9 / 50%
5. McDavid gets 1, Meyers gets a fine 0 / 0%
6.McDavid gets a fine, Meyers gets 1 0 / 0%
7.both get fines 0 / 0%

Your guess what Parros and the other DOPES will decide.

There's more combo's.. but these are most likely.. who knows maybe they give McDavid a 3 game so the NHL can use suspensions to "manage" the standings like they do games.

It's another chance for Parros to make things equal and benefit his home team in the process. Thinking 2 each.

McDavid creating controversy the game before with his elbow to the head of Marcus Johansson will likely do him no favours. I say they both get 2 games.

I believe this as well. It has the added benefit (from the NHL's point of view) of having both players miss the rematch on Thursday.

You know a lot of intense crap happens when Canadian teams play each other. Fans rag each other. There is a normal level of it usually.

None of it compares to online yappers you see from Canucks fans. They are just the worst. Most insecure fanbase…We had a whole BoA series against the Flames, I don’t remember much of any online wars…but the internet Canuckers just hate everyone and everything. I think it stems from an inner hatred for themselves. They truly are special.

Wonder what that guy is doing now. He's got to be well into his career now. Not in a dox him or figure it out sort of way, but just idle pondering.
