Holloway is doing well in St. Louis

Is he though?
I dont pay attention to ex-Oilers much but I saw he got dropped in both my fantasy leagues in the last month or two. When I saw your comment I went and had a look at his stats and he has 7G-6A-13P.
He recently went 6 games without a point and 13 without a goal. His TOI is all over the place but he looks to be in the 16/17 min quite often. He is 5th among ST.L forwards for TOI so it seems he is getting some opportunity.
Fancy stats don't give much of a picture outside of average.

Dont get me wrong, 7G would put him third on the Oilers but I dont think he would have been a game changer on this team.

I haven't watched the Blues play much so I am curious how he is playing in ways that might not show up in a box score.
I think him and Broberg will always be under a different scrutiny because they left as RFA's and it's unique but I still think it was the right move to walk away.

There's a weird thing we do here in Edmonton where we track just about every player who leaves and we either trash them if they're not playing well, or die about it if they do have a good stretch.

It's not just fans - the media guys do it too. They'll flat out cheerlead against certain players after they go (Hemsky, Puljujarvi, Yakupov) and they'll talk up the ones they feel got away (Broberg the most recent obvious example). By far they prefer ripping on ex-Oilers, even if the narrative doesn't really fit. All those offensive dmen over the years have been a favourite topic.

Anyhow, it's a fool's game, especially with depth guys. It's unlikely they would play the same role here, get the same minutes, get the same special teams pushes, similar linemates, etc.

Maybe Holloway is top-6 here if he's here, but let's remember, we've had him here for 89 games over two seasons and he got Top-6 ice time at most, 4-5 times in the regular season. He got a bit more of a push in last year's playoffs, but some of that was after the Oilers started taking injuries. Even then, his playoff stats weren't that impressive, especially given the top lines push - he had 7 points in 25 playoff games.

Sometimes it seems an easy cudgel on management - I think of Cogliano, who the media was ready to pack his bags when he left, but who they hyped up and praised the rest of his career. I think it was fair to complain about the Oilers believing that Eric Belanger was the piece that made him redundant here, and while I disagree with the media guys' narrative that he'd have never been able to learn to be a two-way forward if he hadn't left, I do think it's hard to know if he'd have done as well or not because he'd have had a totally different set of facts.

With Holloway (and Broberg), it's important to remember that they forced the decision on the Oilers at a time where the Oilers are trying to convince all their best players to give up a little cash on their next deal. I agree that the team could have made things easier on themselves by giving those two players more of a push early to see if they had what it takes, and then maybe they both sign at reasonable numbers before it gets to offer sheet territory, but last summer the players put a gun to the organizations head, and if we'd matched, it's hard to believe that it ends well for us.

Podkolzin hasn't had as much of a hot streak as Holloway started the season on, and so he only has 8 points to Holloway's 13. He's also half the cap hit though. Emberson is less than a third of Broberg's cap hit and shoots right. Again, not a perfect player and Broberg's early season pace was great. But I don't know that we need to follow their career game by game the rest of the way. I'm pretty comfortable that the Oilers needed to move on at this point. If we don't win the Cup this year, the difference isn't Dylan Holloway or Philip Broberg.
