Halloween and hockey, what's not to like? Too bad the Thursday night football game will probably be a dud.

Draisaitl needs to be the guy here. He's the new 14 million dollar man. He's got a chance to show everyone he's capable of getting a team to the playoffs without McDavid.

14? Pretty sure the cap hit is 8.5. The last time Mcdavid was injured 29 won the Hart. He's the only reason this team isn't under water already this year.

If there are still people who need to be shown how valuable Leon Draisaitl is then maybe hockey isn't their thing?

The raise for next year is already signed. He earned the 14 million dollar contract, now he has to justify it. Draisaitl is the Oilers' Scottie Pippen. The great player who lives in the shadow of the greatest will always have to fight the whisper campaign that he's a creation of circumstance.

I don't follow basketball. Did Pippen ever win a scoring title or an MVP? What's the equivalent of 3 50 goal seasons in basketball?

I wonder if 97 has justified his 12 this year? Or his 17 for two years from now...no cups so far. And injury prone apparently.

I'm kind of joking but also it's absurd to think 29 has anything to prove beyond the obvious (winning a cup).

With the exception of the last two rounds last year when he played with broken ribs and fingers he's been the best playoff performer probably since lemieux.

Switch their nationalities and the narrative around these two would be very different.

Is there a stereotype on German players I am not aware of? Seems kind of ridicules to pull the "switch nationalities" thing in this situation. The fact is that McDavid only missed 6 games back in 2020 and the Oilers were 3-2-1 in that span. Draisaitl had 12 points in those 6 games, so yes he can carry the team. However, we are now 4.5 years later and there is a totally different team to carry, an older and slower team, and one that has had a ton of bad luck so far. The circumstances are different, but I think the best case scenario is that the results are the same.

Yes he can carry the team. Yes Canadian players have different narratives built around them in Canada than Europeans.

100%. It's partly our xenophobic media mouthpieces here, but there's definitely a different narrrative for Canadians & Americans versus European players. I mean, Mark Spector seems to think the best compliment you can have for a European player is that they speak with not much of an accent. The guys that struggle with doing interviews in English inevitably get crapped all over.

I mean, if Hemsky had been from Banff and Smyth from Czechia, I suspect we might have a different name up on the ring of honour...

The funny (maybe just to me) thing is I wasn't think of Draisaitl's German or Euroness at all. My only thought was of him as the second banana to McDavid.

I agree with that as well. When McDavid is out, the pressure on Draisaitl looms large, especially as he's currently the holder of the biggest contract in hockey, even if that hasn't kicked in yet.

Did not think you were going the Mark Spector path, but agreeing with the other poster that it is a real thing, and that he's judged slightly differently because of it. I mean, just look at people even in here commenting on him giving grouchy answers or seeming intense or mean at times. When it's Toews or MacKinnon, everyone thinks they're being great leaders. When they're German, they just say they're "pissy".

Also, large guy with a long stride as narrative number 3. Those guys are always tarred as "lazy" or "don't care" because it looks too natural. Mediocre media guys (and lots of fans, although they're not paid to know better) always love the choppy skating styles that look like the guy is REALLY making an effort to get around the ice, even if they're not close to as fast.

"Thinking that a bad team's best players are the reason the team is bad is the "Tambellini re-signing Lennart Petrell" of sports opinions." @Woodguy55
