First goal scored off a Utah players stick, preseason or regular, ended up in Utah's net

I do hate over-arching threads. Doesn't it defeat the whole purpose of the different forums?

Also ha ha ha on Utah.

Season is full of little events that don't deserve a thread, no? :) And general complaining about how teams are messing us over in the standings or against our division rivals.

And haha Utah indeed. Although they did win the game. Pre-season cup contenders with the Flames.

But what ends up happening is that even big events get buried in these threads. It's just a dumping ground for everything.

Speaking of pre-season heroics, Rangers last night down 3-0 going in to the third versus the Isles and win 6-4...Patrick Roy going to make some cuts pretty quick there...

People gotta know when something is worth of a thread or not.

For example, Matthews left early because of an "Upper body thing" as quoted from Berube. Normally that would just be a little game day thread post to laugh.

But if it turns out that the "upper body thing" is that Matthews got chest hair implants over the summer and one of the plugs got caught in his equipment, that would be new thread worthy.

Saw Chytil, who missed most of last season with concussions, got hurt by some plug last night. Returned to the game later in the night and scored a goal, but that's always the biggest fear with pre-season - losing a valued vet to some idiot kid trying to make a name for himself.

I'm never sad to see rookie-laden lineups in September, because the games mean nothing, but people can still get hurt...maybe even more likely to when they're still getting up to speed and there's erratic wanna-bes trying their hardest to get noticed.

Doughty out month-to-month. Kadri hurt. Tavares and Nylander both left last night's Maple Leafs game.

Preseason is just the worst.

Oh boy, I'm just so sad about who the hockey gods selected for this list of injured players

Really though ... For the rest of pre-season let's not play Bouch/Ek 29 and 26 minutes again please, and McDavid's line 20+.

Totally agree. The other night we saw a noboby end Laine's pre-season and potentially a lot of this season, and some other nobody trying to fight Michkov in the Bruins/Flyers game. Just brutal.

McDavid doesn't agree with any of it though lol. Sounds like he actually requested to play last night in a game he wasn't originally penciled in for. Ends up playing between Perry and Podkolzin. 21 mins. Gets chased around by Pinus Suter.

8 games is the most ridiculous notion. A money grab for teams. Shorten up the preseason and start the regular season earlier so we aren’t playing in to late June.

Jeremy Swayman finally signs a $66M deal with Boston for an AAV of $8.25M!!!

The guy has looked pretty good when he has played, but this is someone with a grand total of 132 regular season games with last year's 44 being the most games he has started in a year.

That's a pretty risky deal IMO. They'll be looking for get at least 60 starts from a guy who has never had more than 44.

Just a little higher than what Cam Nealy announced to the world that Boston's offer was :) Nice Kevin Lowe impression by old Cam.

Boston is a strange team. Super top loaded that works wonderfully in the regular season for them, but depth and goaltending kept killing them in the playoffs. Swayman actually stopped the goalie excuse for once last playoffs, so I guess it's worth a try sticking with him. Definitely pricey.

Ullmark gets the same AAV for 4 years

Darren Dreger @DarrenDreger
Four years. $8.25 mil per for Ullmark and the @Senators

Guess playoff performance matters less when all your franchise is desperate to do is to just make the playoffs period. Ullmark is the man for the job in the regular season.

Edit: Daccord gets 5M x 5 from Seattle with 69 career games under his belt. Goalies getting PAID.

Broberg scores in his first game, because of course he would. And Holloway 2nd assist on it. Grubauer just had to Grubauer.

They football how, they just want to know how many. Still counts, but from where he took the shot, the velocity and the time Grubauer had to find it with a clear view …. Brutal goaltending.

Broberg played 20:23, 1 hit, 2 blocks +1 and a goal
Holloway played 16:01, 3 hits and an assist.

I don't want to dwell on it too much, but I just think how much more well rounded this roster would be with those 2 on what I was expecting/hoping they would get signed for.

Oh well - onward and upward.

JUst remember, Podklozin will be better than Holloway and Emberson gives us an actual right shot defender to use on the right side! I'm completely fine with those two having some level of personal success on a mediocre St Louis Blues team that probably misses the playoffs.

If anyone wants to feel better, Broberg was like 23% xGF in the game. Loads of chances against, but paid for none of it. So he basically just continued his fortunes of the playoffs. Maybe he goes full Canucks though and it lasts all year :) Scoring a hat trick against us at some point this year is probably in the bag.

Broberg hilariously with as many points as the Oilers top guy with 6. Tied for 5th in the NHL in points for Dmen. Tied for first EVP. Playing almost 20 min/game and 5th in +/-.

Also one + higher than him, Michael Kesselring. 4 points, +7 and also almost 20 minutes/game.

The hockey gods are trolling us. Brobergs 1.10 PDO perfectly counters our 0.9

Kesselring does look really good though in his role. That was a pretty big unforced error by Holland. Exact kind of player we needed right now.

If I was to complain about Kesselring, that would certainly be hindsight on my part. I knew nothing about him and was happy to get Bjugstad for "scraps" - but I'm not paid to watch all these guys in the minors. I do remember a few posters on here being pretty bummed about it. And though still very early, it is looking like they may have had cause for concern.

24 years old, 6'4" RHD. 21 points and +11 in 65GP last year. And cheap!

And cheap!

Big misread by the organization there. They preferred the older, bigger player in Desharnais. But I mean, the ceiling is much, much higher. Holland didn't like relying on kids though...

We did pay Holland $5M x 5 years while Bobby Nick said "overripe" every second sentence as a key reason why. Bobby and Katz probably believed there was no better GM on earth for drafting and evaluating prospects and development.

Yeah, we got basically none of that.

Kaapo Kahkonen on waivers today from Winnipeg. I think the Oilers should take a hard look there, he has put up some decent numbers when not playing for San Jose. I think it would be good to be ready with motivated goalies.

Would have been a good decision. It's frankly baffling how much confidence they seem to have in career minor-leaguer Calvin Pickard.

Celebrini's first goal was meh. I remember the grind McDavid had to go through to finally get one.

Celebrini does a little spin on the boards and throws a puck across the zone to no one 15ft in front of the net, and a Blues player kindly kicks it in. I'm sure much better ones to come. Looked good out there, while the Sharks were choking a 3 goal lead. The choke included Ceci tipping one puck over his goalies pad while doing the classic bizzare defending the side of the net and he and Nurse are famous for.

Nevermind. Celebrini on IR already. Injury prone. Bust.

Ryan McLeod with a casual 4 game goal scoring streak.

At least Cody Ceci still plays like Ceci

Watching some Utah tonight.. Kesserling sure looks good on the RHS.. great skater.. smart .. big.. wish we had him and Broberg as a pair for $6+M instead of Nurse and <anybody.>.. Nurse is playing of 3rd pairing level these days.. a cap space boat anchor.. that signing was one of Hollands worst mistakes as GM

Oh, look, Trouba elbows a Hab in the head and injures him. And the league will do nothing about it. nothing will ever change. Guy should be banned from the league.

.. I tend to agree.. he was Oilers 3rd best D-man last playoffs.. should have been a priority signing.. he'll be on the St, Louis top D pair in short order.

Ive said this for years but it bears repeating. Kevin Chevldayov is far and away the best gm in the league.

With the challenges that market continues to face year after year he somehow keeps that team competitive and a legit threat. Its astounding really.

Kr55 can speak better to this than I can, but I believe the advanced stats on Broberg suggested he was more lucky than good in the playoffs. I think he was underwater for chances against, but had a really high on-ice sv%.

That's not to say he wasn't a valuable contributor, and probably the right guy to play over Desharnais, but I think he wasn't as amazing as it's being suggested...
