Bob sounds positively despondent on the radio right now. โBad sign heโs been declared out this quicklyโ.

Awesome! What a great first period!
God this team is frustrating. If it's not the offense, it's the defense. If it's not the defense, it's the goaltending. If it's not the goaltending, it's the PK. If it's not the PK, it's the PP.
Big win last night, but what is this trash?
And now McDavid has an LBI and is gone for the game and who knows how long? An already glacial team just became astronomically slower. Just perfect.

Didn't even call the trip on McDavid that took him out.
Skinner letting in lame floaters from the blue line. So much for getting back over .500.

Skinner follows up a great game with a total stinker so far.
Honestly, if I hadn't thought Bowman was an absolute joke of a GM before... I definitely do now.
The Oilers without McD are easily one of the slowest, plodding teams in the league.

Truth.
McD has masked a very slow, mediocre team .. for a few years.
The guys on the roster that have an ability to Dig-the-F-In are few.

Time to look past the nice guy aspect. Skinner needs to be replaced before this team has a shot at anything. He stepped up big time after the Campbell debacle, but heโs not the guy either.
Not entirely his fault, but definitely a major part of the team not being good enough.

Great.
Connor gone.. now you see what the Oilers are without him.. not much.
Skinner rockin' the solid 0.666 save percentage..
Nurse (healthy) still useless.
Nobody can shoot the puck in the net.. no snipers except for LD.
.. and pretty sad as a team when your oldest player, Perry is the only guy to stand up for a team mate recently..

I am seriously concerned about this squad without McDavid. I second the thought about this being a corner turned in a bad way.
I hate thinking this, but if McDavid is down for a while and the team goes into the dumps over the next 20 games, I think a teardown might be unavoidable.

The Nurse signing (franchise boat anchor).. Campbell signing.. losing BOTH Broberg and Holloway (both with top NHL speed).. for nothing.. all GM'ing and poor talent appraisal.
Game #10 and you can feel the season slipping away.. just in time for McDavid's new contract ..

We're at year 25 of the bad management problem. After a certain point it stops being a problem and starts being who you are.
The Oilers can win games without McDavid. Of course they can also lose a lot without him. All eyes on Draisaitl to earn that contract now.

The problem is that the team did handle Broberg & Holloway right this summer. They couldn't overpay either of those players, and they made the right decision stepping away from the offer. Yes, they're on massive heaters to start the year, and Broberg is in a nice spot where there's very little in front of him in St. Louis on the depth chart.
Good for them on getting paid and for finding a nice landing spot for themselves. Holland definitely made errors in their development paths, and the idea of just continuing to push players down when they maybe deserved to be able to show what they can do at the NHL level, especially as we pushed forward with marginal NHL players ahead of them.
But I think it's something we have to move on from. The reality of the salary cap system is that we won't be able to keep everyone as a contender. We will need to constantly backfill as some of these marginal pieces graduate and we need to move on from them. We've seen this with Chicago and Los Angeles and Pittsburgh in the last decade and a half. To keep together the core means they let others walk. If they don't have adequate management, then there's a slow decay, although superstars can cover up a lot of faults for some time.
I don't think we need to mention Philip Broberg every time we lose though. He's not the difference maker here, nor is Dylan Holloway.
I do wonder about the decision to bring back Corey Perry. I do question whether Derek Ryan has the speed to still be an NHL player, and I wonder if we wouldn't have been better waiving him than Raph Lavoie (although Lavoie also isn't a reason why we are where we're at). The decision to once again move forward with the same goaltending tandem seems absolutely bonkers to me, but we do have some limitations given cap space.
Sometimes, a team needs a little adversity to rally around, so hopefully they pull together without 97 and some other people grab the bull by the horns here. We're going to need it.

They are now in LTIR for however long this might last - maybe they are out of it soon and accruing cap space again or maybe not. Regardless I'll be shocked if the player(s) they acquire at the deadline are a better fit or on a better contract than Broberg is. They had the space to keep him. They would have been in LTIR but would have had that player for at least 2 years with 97 and 29 still in their 20s. They should have kept him and are going to be regretting it for a long time.
Holloway is more replaceable and while not ideal to lose him I don't think it will come back to bite them.

I'd argue that in Edmonton, Broberg probably would be playing on the wrong side due to the LD depth and the paucity of depth on the right side.
People hate Nurse, in big part because his salary doesn't match his play, but Broberg wasn't pushing him out or down the lineup. And he's paid too much to be your third pairing LD - not to mention Kulak's pretty stable there.
The Oilers clearly, CLEARLY plan to address their deficiencies by saving up as much as possible and then spending it all at the deadline - likely on a solid RD, and possibly as well on a depth forward and a 1A goalie.

Sunk cost in Nurse (and there is no bigger sunk cost) isn't a reason to let Broberg walk. Play someone on their off side then until you figure out a solution that isn't stretcher/Emberson/Dermot in the top 6.
You're right though we won't know if their chosen coa made sense even for this year until the trade deadline. Hope Im wrong and they being in someone better than Broberg.

There are definitely some that have gone from overpaid to hyperbole related to his play.
He's 100% overpaid, and his contract is probably fully unmoveable between trade restrictions and just sheer size compared to play. I was beating the drum for 4-5 years that Holland was a crap GM, and crap GMs make massive blunders. We do need to just accept that as a fact now though because there's virtually no way to get rid of that deal. We know it's almost certainly untradeable but it's also virtually buyout proof.
If the Oilers were to buy him out this coming summer, we'd have a big cap space gain for one year with Nurse on the books for only $260K...and then we get HAMMERED giving up almost his entire cap hit for nothing for the next four years. The residual isn't awful - five more years at just ~$1MM, but there's almost no savings over the life of the deal other than the first year so you'd just not have the player and retain the hit.
It's UGLY and shows how incompetent Holland was...but then again, we already knew that so may as well accept it and just be glad he's gone. I really hope he hires on to be GM elsewhere!

I mean the Angels were worse with Ohtani and Trout on their team. That's impressive for futility. The Browns are the worst run organization in North America. The error those two franchise have made, is that they haven't completely captured the media, so they can cover up every toe stub. If Oiler's ownership and management have put a master class on, its for that. As we get very little criticism. Location helps I'm sure, Anaheim and Cleveland are out of the limelight, but we're a smaller target again.
