Carolina choking numerous wide open nets and great opportunities is satisfying after the start we have had. Hope it lasts

Was hoping for a game where the guys were focused and dialled in, especially after a few days off, but nope... more of the same.

Outside of McDavid's goal and some good urgency and pressure on the first PP, the rest of the period was all Carolina. This team is either super lethargic or just old and slow.

Stu had a weird period, leaving the net wide open a few times because he just totally lost the puck and skated off into the sunset.

It took the Canes about 5 minutes to figure out how to play this iteration of the Oilers and they're pushing the play to the outside, showing no respect to our D and forechecking hard with two forwards, and are causing chaos in front of our net.

Also, when is Draisaitl going to grow up? Seriously?

Some guys need to be a little mean from time to time to be at their best. That's going to sometimes lead to penalties, and sometimes it's going to draw penalties in revenge. I'll take the good with the bad there.

Messier still hasn't "grown up".
I think it has been proven that pissy Drai takes a few penalties but also puts up more points/wins

Not to mention the amount of abuse that he (and other elite players) take is astronomical. The fact that NHL refs think they need to keep things even by calling the inevitable retaliation or chintzy infraction from someone like Draisaitl while ignoring the non stop muggings is on the NHL and their god awful officiating - not the stars for occasionally sticking up for themselves.

The fact is the penalties are going to be roughly even anyway. So Draisaitl, Mcdavid etc should absolutely push back now and then to create a bit of room.

Messier, Anderson, Linseman, Guerin, Pronger...we've had a bunch of players over the years who were mean and would take penalties from time to time but it was an important element to their game.

I actually always wished Hall was a little meaner when he was here. He would cleanly take hits and I thought if he was just a little more liberal with elbows and stick, that maybe he wouldn't have been hurt so often.

Anyhow, I'm totally fine with Draisaitl making sure people know he's willing to dish it out. It probably gets him a little extra room and respect, and it's nice to have a few guys who are miserable to play with. Even better when they'll also light you up on the scoreboard too.

Mean is throwing a crosscheck, not an extra stick tap well away from the play or a little spear.

He’s taken some brutal and obvious penalties in big games in the playoffs. He’s a veteran of the game now and about to be the highest paid player in the NHL. It is reasonable to expect he would grow out of it one day and know when to pick his moments. Love him but everybody has something they can improve.

I agree. I didn’t see his penalty tonight, but it feels like he’s more known to react than known to dish it out. That just seems to invite it.

Make it count if you are gonna put your team on the PK.

Mcdavid doing stuff himself more tonight with good results. Had to chance to waste the opportunity passing to Hyman there but just buries the PPg himself

what a pass from 29.

RNH needs to establish some semblance of a shooting threat. The PK don't even bother him anymore because they know he is just going to circle and pass.

I always think that maybe fans are a little too fast to criticize 97 & 29 on the PP. I think after everything we've seen the last few years, I think they've earned some benefit of the doubt. Will they sometimes try things that don't work? Absolutely. But they've been NHL record-level good at this the last couple years, so maybe, just maybe we should trust that they know what they're doing?

Drai has been slow on the PP IMO. Can see him struggling to make decisions. Nuge and Hyman are the main guys really underperforming though.

Or does he look slow because he's rushed due to the PK basically ignoring 93 and 18? Its pretty much a 3 on 4 most of the time.

Possible just not having options is part of it. Still lots of unforced errors.

I really don’t feel like Hyman and Nuge are indispensable on the PP. 90% of what happens runs through McDrai. Hope if this keeps up Knob lets some other guys get a shot on the first unit. Hyman might have used up his luck for a while on a 50 goal season. Nuge, not sure what happened to him. He was a great shooting threat on the PP a couple years ago.

I'd really like to see Skinner on the RNH spot - loves to shoot - and Perry in for Hyman. I think it would create a whole new set of problems for PK's - worst case have it as an option so teams don't know exactly what they are going to be dealing with.

I wouldnt mind seeing this change as well.
On one hand this unit has been one of the best of all time, so they get some grace from me.
On the other, rotating some guys in can have some benefits. If they do pot a couple it can help with confidence for the depth guys.
It also helps balance out ice time a little. RNH is important in certain defensive matchups. At some point, Hyman has and will get run down from the abuse he takes in front of the net. Saving those two some energy and/or bruises could be helpful come playoff time.

McDavid wasted a nice hat trick chance on Hyman. Doh

Wow. Carolina cannot score no matter what they do. Enjoyable

They have had a couple of whiffs but a couple big saves from Skinner has been nice to see.

I think we are owed a game like this as well. Carolina also famous for lots of chances and no finish. Ends their season every year.

Would have really liked to see Janmark get the puck out after Skinner's huge save. He had all the time in the world, rushed it, and gave Carolina that goal.

I don’t hate Nurse on the right but Dermott is kind of a mess.

Kulak didn’t want to play the right side so much that he forced us to go back to Nurse/Ceci in the finals. Well, now that Nurse is a right D maybe we should put him with Kulak on the left.

If that works. Then, oops, maybe we should have kept broberg lol. But getting another LHD for the 3rd pair would be a heck of a lot easier than finding a top 4 RHd

I've really liked Jeff Skinner so far. Stronger than I expected on the backcheck. Some creativity on offence. Bad luck he didn't have a goal there.

Me as well. I have mentioned his vision and instincts a few times. He seems to be really adept at finding the open/soft spot in the offensive zone.

Still waiting for him to be tried with McDavid

I have to think he will get that chance. The lines get mixed around at some point on every team, whether it is due to injury or a needed change.

Getting our fair share of amazing chances squandered. Including McDavid seeming to not want a hat trick and obsessed with helping Hyman score. These 2 teams deserve each other tonight.

Ugh. McDavid really doesn’t want the hatty. Passes to just no one instead of shooting.
