Final pre-season game will feature something close to what we should see on Wednesday:
RNH – McDavid – Hyman
J. Skinner – Draisaitl – Arvidsson
Janmark – Henrique – C. Brown
Podkolzin – Philp – Perry
Ekholm – Bouchard
Nurse – Emberson
Kulak – Stecher
Skinner
Looks like the top three lines are pretty set with Podkolzin, Philp, Perry, and Ryan rotating in and out of the fourth line. Still curious to see if Dermott will make the cut; not playing this game may signal his end. I like him way better than either Stetcher or Brown.

The season is decided by it.. Nurse has to be way better (at least a $5M NHL D-man level).. and Emberson has to continue to positively develop..
Based on Nurses season last year, I had Broberg the #3 best D-man on the team.. with Nurse below Kulak.. a D. Nurse earning even 50% of his contract value will be easiest way to fix the Oiler defense problems.

Emberson looked decent with Nurse. Just gonna focus on that.

Barf.
Skinner looks done.. haven't seen any moment in camp from him that resembles a top 6 NHL forward..
Nurse still lobbing in muffin point shots to the goalie's bread basket, killing O-zone possession.
Philp continues to look good.. earning a spot.
Arvedson with some good moments.. glimpse of a player
I am getting an idea why Skinner has never been in a playoff game.. and why he was bought out by Buffalo.

The bar was set last year at 2-9-1 to start the season. I'm afraid of the first 11 games this year. Were there any positives from this pre-season? ...I'm waiting.
...this time, it's for real (isn't it?).

I havent watched anything but highlight clips but can give you one huge positive; No major injuries.
Outside of a couple low end roster spot battles, no injuries is the only thing that mattered.
Other than that, there is nothing else to judge from analyzing these games. Every single year a handful of young players or bubble players light up preseason. They have a lot to play for and are giving 100%. Conversely, a number of vets looked washed up and ready to retire.
NHL preseason is too long and waste of everyones time.

Easy to overreact to preseasons in the moment, but also very hard to remember them a few weeks later.
Some highlights from the 23-24 preseason.
-Connor Brown and Bourgault and Lavoie sharing the 2nd place in goal scoring for the Oilers in preseason behind only McDavid. Brown would go on to have a brutal goal scoring drought and Bourgault takes a big step back in his development.
-The Oilers had a 5-2-1 record. Month or so later we are firing the coach
-McDavid doesn’t experience a single goal against and 7 goals for 5v5. Domination through the whole preseason. Ends up having one of his slowest starts in the regular season and barely gets in the convo for the scoring title or Hart.
Indeed, let’s just get on to the real stuff

Maybe Dermott gets a contract?
I guess we'll see if Lavoie has any market value..

If all these players on waivers are going down to Bakersfield, doesn't that leave the Oilers with just 12 forwards and 6 d-men?
Something must be up. Maybe there just waiving them all now so they can more easily send them down later (easier to get through waivers now).

Our prospect pool looking dismal. As our competition it probably makes sense for Vegas to claim him just for that reason. Our options to fill our roster with any even remotely useful youth have dwindled a lot.

We get first dibs if they send him down, correct? I believe that Lavoie would have to remain on the Knights NHL roster for the entire NHL season in order for us to not have the option to reclaim him at some point.
Kid needs s a chance, and Vegas may a great option. I did not realize their forward roster was so thin.
Barbashev (5.0M) Eichel (10.0M) Olofsson (1.075)
Dorofeyev (1.835M) Hertl (6.75M) Stone (9.5M)
Brisson (925k) Karlsson (5.9M) Holtz (894k)
Howden (1.9M) Roy (3.0M) Kolesar (1.4M)
Lavoie could easily slide up and down that roster and find a fit.

Yeah. Think we get him back if we want if Vegas gives up on him. Vegas sure loves to sign a big name vet or 2 every year after trading for them at the deadline. Wish it wasn’t so predictable that stone will be on LTIR again next feb so they can try to do it again.

Back on waivers today with LV.
Did they do this just to mess with our complicated cap situation for opening day?
If we put in a claim and others do, do we get priority?

lol. What dinks. Hate that team so much.
Maybe they only wanted one of Lavoie or Cole Schwindt and decided they like Schwindt better.

Poor Raph.. gets waived by two teams within 2 days.. guess that's the market talkin'
Yeah I think they put in two claims hoping for one of the two.. but got both.. wanted Schwindt more.. whoever he is.
Raph didn't even have enough time to tell his Bakersfield landlord he was moving.. he can save the call ..
Some winger in Bako just lost his extra ice time..

Worth noting, the Oilers are short players, and I think that demoting Lavoie was a cap mechanism anyhow. If we get him back, then great. Even better if the Knights pay half his salary, but I think that's old info - I don't think it's the case any more.
I like Lavoie as a bottom six player. Some size, decent skater, some crash to his game, demonstrated ability to put up points at the AHL level.

According to AI:
Quote: | An NHL player can be reclaimed on waivers under certain conditions. When a player is placed on waivers and another team claims them, the original team has lost their rights to that player. However, if the claiming team subsequently places the player back on waivers within 30 days (or 10 NHL games played), the original team has the option to reclaim the player.
|
Now here is the kicker.
Quote: | If the original team reclaims the player, they must keep them on their NHL roster (they cannot directly assign them to the minors). Additionally, the original team is only responsible for half of the player's remaining salary and cap hit, while the team that initially claimed the player pays the other half.
|
Sounds like a win-win situation for Lavoie and the Oilers. A half price player, screws the Knights and Raph joins the NHL. I do not know how accurate this is, but I like the idea.

Wow, that's pretty nice if true. Although, I guess we have to actually want him on the roster. If we don't actually feel he is ready for the NHL, he is eating some of our cap space we were hoping to accrue.

Derek Van Diest of NHL.com reports the Oilers have an interest in retaining Lavoie and will likely submit a claim before Wednesday’s deadline. If they’re the only team to do so, they can send him directly to Bakersfield without having to pass him through waivers again.

If someone else puts in a claim, we still get him, but that removes our ability to send him down without doing waivers yet again?
