Looks like mostly the B-team with the A goalie playing in Winnipeg tonight.

Savoie – Pederson – Arvidsson
Janmark – O’Reilly – Brown
Hoffman – Philp – Griffith
Caggiula – Hamblin – Ryan

Kulak – Emberson
Dineen – Wanner
Hoefenmeyer – Carrick

Skinner
Delia

Should give Skinner a good test.

Adam mentioned Chytil almost being lost in pre-season.

It was interesting that we played our top D pair 28:30 and 26:30 in a nothing game against Calgary scrubs in their first competative action of the year. 25 and 24 even strength minutes.

A way to get guys up to speed faster? Or were the other 4 D just that painful for the coach to watch? :)

..I'd imagine a bit of both.

Should be interesting to see O'Reilly centering two NHL'ers tonight (Brown + Janmark).. vs mostly a NHL roster in Winni.
.. kid's only 18.

I'll also be intrigued to see Philp play.. haven't seen him yet.. local media reports are good.. but then its local media reports.. which IME haven't been very reliable recently regarding Oiler prospects ..

Top line in tonight against Seattle. Guessing the Draisaitl/Arvidsson/Skinner combo will go on Monday

RNH – McDavid – Hyman
Podkolzin – O’Reilly – Perry
Lavoie – Ryan – Hoffman
Pederson – Philp – Savoie

Ekholm – Bouchard
Dermott – Stecher
Gleason – Kemp

Pickard
Rodrigue

Savoie, O'Reilly, Griffith, Dineen, and Carrick all cut today.

Might have expected Savoie and Dineen to hang around a little longer.

That leaves 31 in camp:

4 goalies: Delia, Pickard, Rodrigue, Skinner

10 Defensemen: Akey, Bouchard, Brown, Ekholm, Emberson, Gleason, Kemp, Kulak, Nurse, Stetcher

17 Forwards: Arvidsson, Brown, Caggiula, Draisaitl, Hamblin, Henrique, Hyman, Janmark, Lavoie, McDavid, Nugent-Hopkins, Pederson, Perry, Philp, Podkolzin, Ryan, Skinner

I don't think Akey will play, he's just in camp for the experience, still recovering from surgery last year.. interesting that Gleason is one of the last Bako D-man in camp.. I saw him play last year in Abbotsford.. looked to be 2nd best D skater behind Broberg..

Pederson, Hamblin are just roster filler until end of pre-season.. Caggiula, Kemp getting respectful extended camp for loyal service to the franchise .. getting close to final roster.. decision coming for Lavoie.. possible he gets claimed.. Philp is waiver exempt.. but playing like he could make the roster on merit.. 4th line center, good on face offs.. once he gets some PK experience he'll likely take a job..

I have not been following camp closely, but I am surprised that Savoie was cut. I really thought that he was going to make the team or be a last day cut at least. Hopefully he stays healthy and and get a look later this season.

I was expecting more from him as well, based on all the media opinions when he was acquired .. I saw him in 3 games at Penticton.. IMHO he didn't put much distance himself from the rest.. and saw one game in preseason.. same thing.. you can see some of the skill.. but he was supposed to be speedy but I haven't really seen that yet..

.. the Nichol kid looked good.. mobile and lots of puck possession.

Probably given out too many forward contracts to need to rush any young offensive prospects. Think he has only played 6 AHL games. He has lots to prove still playing against men.

It was only Canuck scrubs.. but I liked Emberson.. looked steady.. good decisions.. Stecher looked pretty mobile, made good plays.. and I could see why Gleason was still in camp..

Skinner was tested and made all the stops you expect.

Of the new wingers, Arvedson was always in the mix.. good stick.. played some PK as well.. you can see he has wheels.. looks like a solid acquisition.. so far

Wasn't as impressed with Skinner (forward) .. looked a step slow.. both skating and hands.. I thought his skating was his top feature.. guess I expected more.. but its pretty early.. it took Brown almost the whole season to get his game speed where it is.. (although recovering from surgery) ..

McDavid was ALL business.. had the best hit of the night

Yep he needs to develop before he's NHL ready.. "harden up" down south in Bako.. "over-ripen" is an odd word they tend to use.. the next step after "over ripe" is.. rotten.. then you have to throw it out.. before it starts to stink.. :)

Savoie has the skills but needs to be able to get the puck and to retain the puck.. needs to develop pro possession skills.

Update:

A chance that Gleason gets picked up, he played well in camp.
Akey back to OHL for what I hope is a come back season 👍🏻🙂

Given injuries to Pickard and Nurse, we're almost at final numbers here. Probably one more cut from the forwards ranks to come.

I think Dermott is still around on a PTO as well. After the Hoffman cut, I'm sort of wondering if they might go 13F /8D to start the year.

Brown has struggled badly, and has zero history of being any good. Seems we really want to keep him around though. Hope he isn't a weird blind spot with the org/coaching going forward that actually starts to get regular ice time.

Gleason can't catch a break. I'd rather him try to play the right side over Brown.

I noticed Oilers twitter seemed to REALLY hate Brown's game last night.

The team does love a designated puncher though, and they think size matters.

Josh Brown is, according to some, the worst player in the NHL last year.

So yes, I hope he isn't an Oilers regular.

Yeah, saw the same, and he looked pretty bad in the bit I saw him. Jokes about how he doesn't discriminate and passes to both teams equally, lol. Shoulda just kept Ceci if Brown is gonna be touching regular season ice.

Might've been the plan.. early waivers is the best way to sneak a guy through.. other teams haven't made all their cuts.. and.. NO injuries yet to open up roster spots.. only the bottom or bottom feeders will have open spots for bubble NHL'ers..

Brown is around because they know they can send him down any time and he'll be untouchable on waivers due to the 3 year contract.

Went to the game last night on free corporate gold seats for the preseason! Woo! It was still pretty fun. A couple of thoughts:

McDavid looked like he was just practicing doing cool stuff
Leon looked bored until the third (he was right)
Emberson looked poised. I tried to focus on him during his shift came away hopeful
Brown was meh. Not as bad as people were saying, but not good enough
Gleason had a pretty good game, but so long
Skinner also looked like he was doing some game speed positioning practice.

I didn't notice Desharnais made the trip from Vancouver until I looked up and saw he had 15 minutes of ice time. Which is praise.
Lankinen was pretty good in his Nashville pads.
I've always thought Sherwood was a decent player. Don't know why Nashville let him go
Di Guiseppe was invisible, which is not a good thing.

That's all for the players. The arena prices are too expensive but if people are going wait that long and pay that much for that quality of food, that's their business.

Please do not feed the bears. Feeding the bears creates a dependent population unable to survive on their own. Bears.

I wonder if the Oilers are actually worried that someone WOULD claim Josh Brown...

Gleason (and everyone else) cleared waivers.

I wonder if the Oilers are actually worried that someone WOULD claim Josh Brown...

I think the strategy was they know no one will likely claim J. Brown.. he has a 3 y contract.. and the best time to waive guys you worry about getting claimed is earlier than later in camp.. Gleason was the only guy that I think had a hope of being claimed from that group..

The question is what to do about Lavoie.. he could get claimed.. Boston just claimed a guy from Vancouver I never heard of.. so there are teams with holes in their rosters willing to fill with a waiver claim.. Philp has played better.. he's a center.. good at face offs.. and can PK.. Lavoie is a winger.. no PK.. they can send down Philp because he's waiver exempt.. but ahead of Lavoie on NHL utility..

Dermot has also played decent.. probably better than Brown.. and a RHD.. interesting to see if they sign Dermott.. send down Brown.. ?

I hope you're wrong and someone DOES claim Brown. Remember, there's a lot of questionable GMs in the league and so a Conroy or Guerin or Adams or Grier might see a lot of value in a 6'5 defenceman with no upside.

Tonight's lineup:

RNH – McDavid – Hyman
J. Skinner – Draisaitl – Arvidsson
Janmark – Henrique – C. Brown
Caggiula -Philp – Ryan

Ekholm – Bouchard
Nurse – Dermott
Kulak – J. Brown

Skinner
Rodrigue

Our first look at Nurse in the pre-season in an almost starting roster line-up. The only players still with the team and not playing tonight: Perry, Podkolzin, Emberson, Stetcher, Pickard, and Lavoie. Last two are battling injuries.

Continue to root for no more injuries.

Every game with no injuries is a W in the preseason.

I haven't watched any of the pre-season games, but I'm genuinely surprised Caggiula is on the roster still. I didn't think he was going to be an NHL regular anymore; he had 37 points in 43 AHL games, which is okay not amazing. Noah Philp had 37 points in 70 games, so even less.

Have to imagine Lavoie will stick. I am learning towards the Oilers signing Dermott and going 8D and 13F, but we will see. There's a few surprises that are sticking around late into camp.

All eyes will be on Nurse, mine will at least.. if I can find a broadcast.. not on Center Ice out here.

Caggiula has been a loyal soldier.. I suspect the Oilers are doing him a solid.. plus he's been alright in camp so far..

Ah. Quality highlight. Brown jumps up to hit someone in the neutral zone that doesn’t even have the puck. Gives him a nice view standing on the boards of the odd man rush goal against right after. Can’t wait to see more of this guy.

Rodrigue has looked like belongs in the AJHL so far this preseason. He was one of the guys I was really looking forward to seeing with the big club, to see if he might push Pickard for the backup spot. He looks like he should be challenging my 13 year old nephew instead.

Well.
That didn't look very encouraging. Yes, Rodrigue was a problem, but this team was supposed to outscore a bunch of their problems. At least get more than 2.

Don’t think we can expect our top guys to really be all in trying to get wins. Probably more concerned about pushing their fitness level and getting up to speed making plays.

Do think preseason is still useful to see patterns of poor decision making in the fringe guys though. And a guy like Rodrigue should be all in trying to shine. Not encouraging.

Saw the chatter of the league and NHLPA debating a 4 game preseason and 84 game regular season. That would be great. Toss in 3 point games while they are at it since clearly it would mean we don’t care about direct historical season comparisons anymore.

The NHL has done 84 games in the past, so it is not totally unprecedented. I think it was the 93 and 94 seasons.

Yeah, and 80, 70, 71, 56, 78, 76, 74, 50, and lower and lower.

Just was making fun of how we can't have a proper points system because of some excuse of needing to be able to compare to past seasons. Also ignoring how we eliminated ties.

Oh yeah the comparison of records from season to season has been out the window for years, especially since the elimination of ties and adding the loser point. 100 points in a season used to be a gold standard for a team, but anymore thats pretty close to what you need to make the playoffs.

🤢

Maybe the "we won't have a start like last year" slogan was a little premature..?

Haven't seen any games with the top lines that looked dangerous yet..

I fear Rodrigue is what you see.. he had a stretch of 4 goals on 6 shots in the 2nd.. goalie prospect cupboard is pretty bare.. better hope Connor Ungar becomes better than Rodrigue..

Rodrigue has never played an NHL game... I think it may be premature to start the bashing.

Final pre-season game will feature something close to what we should see on Wednesday:

RNH – McDavid – Hyman
J. Skinner – Draisaitl – Arvidsson
Janmark – Henrique – C. Brown
Podkolzin – Philp – Perry

Ekholm – Bouchard
Nurse – Emberson
Kulak – Stecher

Skinner

Looks like the top three lines are pretty set with Podkolzin, Philp, Perry, and Ryan rotating in and out of the fourth line. Still curious to see if Dermott will make the cut; not playing this game may signal his end. I like him way better than either Stetcher or Brown.
