Daniel Nugent-Bowman @DNBsports
Per the Oilers, Evander Kane’s recovery from abdominal surgery is expected to take a minimum of five months. They suggest it could be six months — or longer.

We’re talking about most or all of the regular season here.

5-6 months + 1-2 months to get up to speed in practice. Maybe we really will finally use LTIR to our advantage

More on the injury/surgery

Jason Gregor @JasonGregor
Kane will have surgery in the next couple of days. He mentioned Sean Monahan as someone who gave him great advice and information that helped him make his decision on which doctor to go with. Kane met with three different doctors. They all agreed what surgery was required but had different ways to approach it.

“I’m having a lot done. I have two hernias and two torn abdominal muscles,” Kane on his upcoming surgery.

Did he start with a hernia last Oct/Nov and turned it into 2 hernia's and torn muscles trying to play through it? Still so odd how his injury was handled.

The important thing here is that he is not healthy until the playoffs start. It would be super foolish of the Oilers to bring him back prior to the trade deadline, and only after the deadline if cap space allows. He's out, so leave him out and re-spend that money.

Well, we know Kenny would plan the cap for Kane to be back with 2 weeks left in the season. Probably would have put us right up against the cap already to accrue no space for the deadline too.

Let's see what Mr. Bowman does. Accrued cap space with Kane on IR to the deadline, then putting him on LTIR right before would be the gigabrain move I think :) That assumes we can survive with this roster. RHD looking super weak so far in pre-season. Brown already giving people fits.

Worth noting - Bowman was actually the first to hold a player out for cap space, keeping Patrick Kane sidelined for the remainder of the 2014-15 season, only to make a miraculous recovery for Game 1 versus Nashville that spring. Bowman used his cap space to acquire Kimmo Timonen, Antoine Vermette and Andrew Desjardins all of whom played a role in that summer's Cup win.

Having basically developed the template, it would be surprising if he somehow forgets that we don't need to bring Evander back too early.

Good to know. Bowman earns his pay this year if he turns Kane into an extra 5M player at the deadline this year :) Assuming our RHD is fixed that way or some other way.

The rehabilitation clock doesn't have an alarm.. the time is up when he's 100% .. the healing process takes the time that it takes.... but could easily be game #1 of the playoffs.. but.. who really knows ??😉

We were all hopeful Kane would be ready to go in the regular season. However, due to the severity of Kane's almost unprecedented injury, we have to be sure he is 100% recovered and ready for NHL play, or we risk undoing all the work he has done over the last 5 months.

-Stan Bowman, Feb 2025 after placing Kane on LTIR

Oilers release a 20 minute episode on Oilers+ and on Sportsnet of how complex Kane's injury was and how difficult his surgery/rehab have been.
